Whats illegal? I cant see where the plate is from that pic. Or is that the point, are you running without a plate stuart?

Can't see that a motorised number plate in itself is illegal. As long as the number plate is displayed at all times when using public roads and it is the standard format, you'd be fine.

The idea is so i can run a plate when legally required and hide it when at shows etc, simples

whats to stop you jus taking it off, then putting it back on with a normal plate anyway? As long as its displayed when being driven on the road, should be legal
