Featured Replies

what oil does the mk1 vrs on the 20000 mile service interval use and where do i get it good quality for a reasonable price.

I put Castrol Edge in mine at the weekend. Skoda are currently using Castrol SLX Professional whatever that is  Looks the same as Edge to me!!!

i dont know what oil is in now but if two brands were mixed(i want to top up coz shes sounding a bit rough-serviced 9000 miles ago) it wouldnt do any harm would it.

can you use castrol gtx magnatec 5w30 coz tesco has it for £11 for 2ltr

castrol edge took over longlife SLX.

Maybe worth doing an oil change then if it sounds a bit ropey? That's why I did mine at the weekend, it was only serviced last November but has done about 7000 miles since then and the oil had got really black and thick.

Sump plug and oil filter are £7 from Skoda and if you get 3 of the 2 litre bottles of the Castrol 5w30 from Tescos, thats £40 for the whole lot, you will have 1.5 litres left over for top ups.

I only used the Edge because other members on here recommended it and it said on the bottle it was designed for modern VW group engines, but I think the Magnatec would be fine.

opie oils are a good supplier, im using mobil one and am pretty happy with it tbh. and you'll need 4.5 litres of oil and annoyingly most large containers of oil are only 4litres.

How much :eek::eek::eek:

I use Quantum, which is VAG's own brand. Last can I had cost me £13 from TPS.

Another vote for Quantum here.

forget the top up im going to change filter and everything coz the oil is somewhere between brown and black and is almost like gravy

Quantum, the old Synta Gold has now been superseeded by the Platinum, and a 20L container cost £60 from TPS today.

For those without a TPS trade account AVS Car Parts now stock Quantum Platinum 5w-40 - 5 Litres for £21.00 + vat + Delivery suitable for fixed service intervals.

They also stock Quantum Longlife III 5w-30 for those on a variable service interval for £31.95 + vat + Delivery

just checked at TPS manchester for 5 ltr of longlife 3 oil and an oil filter and total cost is £47.29 i thought it was supposed to be cheap.

Now you mention it, longlife oil is more expensive.

I only use normal fixed interval oil.

Personnally I think 19-20k is far too long to go leaving it between oil changes.

That still seems a little step though

20L of Quantum platinum for £60 sounds very good. I might take a trip to my local TPS next time I do an oil change (at that price you might as well do it every 3-5k). I used to use Quantum on my VR6 and it was good stuff.

got 5ltr of fully synth 5w30 yesterday for £19.00 its by a firm called granville. since the car needs a major service in nov its not worth putting in the dear stuff.cars running a lot smoother and im getting better mpg now so it is well worth changing the oil more regular than 2 yrs or 20k.
