Alternator problems :(

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Looking for some help/advice please.

Looks like my alternator has died, warning light on the dash is lit and with engine running there is only 11.8v across the battery.

Is there a source for brushes ?? been quoted £250 and &190 for a new alternator !!

Localish breaker said they had an alternator, gave them all the numbers of the old one and they still sent the wrong one  "its the only one we had so I thought I'd just send it !! " (overtons in aberdeen)

Currently fitted is a Valeo 110a 06F903023E, will any other model/rating work ??

Thanks in advance

It probably won't be brushes - it's normally the rectifier or the regulator that goes. The last alternator I had go pop was on an XR3i and it cost 45.00 for a service replacement from a local motor factors. The local auto electrician would sell me the parts to replace it but wouldn't give me a warranty if I fitted them myself and he wanted about 30.00 for the bits so in the end I just did the service exchange for 45.00. 190 seems like a lot, try looking for a local motor factors and seeing what they charge - with the number of Octavia taxis I see, I can't believe that alternators are fetching that sort of premium !!

Hi, I found one at a breakers but its a 140A model.

Would it be ok to put it in instead of the 110A one ??

Any potential problems or will the regulator prevent any overcharging etc ??

Cheers

Adbru

It wouldn't expect it to make a difference. They are all regulated to correctly charge the battery. Make sure it's got the correct terminals, mounting points and pulley and ask for a refund if it doesn't work or won't fit. My 2.0TDi has a 140A output, it's better to have more amps than less if you do shorter journeys and/or use lots of electrical equipment. I don't have a wiring diagram of the Octavia and I'm assuming that the alternator has the rectifier and regulator built in (mine looks as if it does) - if they're external it may make a difference but I've only ever seen one alternator with the electronics outside & that was one I'd modified to replace a dynamo and mechanical regulator system.

I'm not an expert on Octavia alternators - YMMV.

Have you checked the alternator fuse in front of the engine compartment fuse box?

Enjoy!
