Turbo replacement on 8 year old Octavia 2000 Elegance Tdi 1.9

Featured Replies

Just had the news today that my turbo needs replacing at a cost of £1100 from a Skoda dealer in Preston. Has anyone else had a price for a replacement? I'm going to hunt around for a cheaper deal before I make a decision whether to go ahead or dump the car! As its 8 years old, its a major factor now whether to spend more money on it, if I can't get a turbo replaced cheaper than £1100.

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

What exactly is the fault with the turbo.

If it's that the variable vanes on it are sticky, a good indy garage or a turbo specialist will be able to clean this up for I'd guess £100 plus fitting/removal.

If it's a dead turbo a recon unit fitted by an indy would be cheaper and even a new unit fitted by an indy would probably come to half of the dealer quote.

Depending on where in the UK you are it might be worth contacting unit18 on here.

Buy a copy of What Diesel mag. loads of info on turbo companys in it. Rebuild is around £300

Time to swap a turbo is quoted as 3 hours by a dealer, and my local mechanic managed to do the job in the same time frame (well he only charged me for 3 hours when he swapped mine over a few years ago).

As per cheezemonkhai, what is the fault with the turbo which needs to be replaced, rather than say cleaned?
