Which brakes?

Featured Replies

I am replacing the front discs and pads on my 1.4 this week, and am looking for advice on which to buy.

The set sold by Jorily (which I assume are OE quality) are £65 including delivery.

Then there are Mintex for £67 inc delivery.

Also available are EBC Ultimax for about £75, or EBC Turbo Groove discs with Green Stuff pads for about £150.

Firstly, for general driving, I'm assuming that the premium for the EBC Turbo Grooves and Green Stuffs isn't really worth my while? If you think they are, convince me!

Secondly, ddes anyone have any strong feelings about either EBC or Mintex (positive or negative), or should I just take the cheapest option from Jorily?

Your opinions are welcome.

I've just bought ATE discs from ECP and Pagid pads from GSF as a good enough, cheap enough set of bits. Mintex is the UK based arm of TMD Friction whose other brands are Textar and Pagid. Check to make sure if you do or do not need anti-squeal fitted to your pads (look at original ones). Both these makes are cheap at the outlets that I used.

I would suggest you do not buy the EBC Turbo Grooved Discs as my father had them on his Scooby and they were VERY NOISY under medium and hard braking. I'm sure they wore down the pads much quicker. I have just replaced them on his car with the Ultimax Black slotted discs and so far they are silent. If you want upgraded discs (of the same Diameter) buy these black ones. I think they are the same price as the TGDs, about £74 each from EBCBrakesDirect. Plain ones are £28 each

If you do a search on EBC pads on here, most people will advise you to avoid Greenstuff and put Ferrodo DS2500 or high performance Mintex or at least use Redstuff. This of course is for the heavier engined Furby vRS. Greenstuff for yours will probably do.

From that list I'd go for the Mintex setup. Also worth checking what exactly Jorily are selling.
