Strange wheel jerking when changing gear

Featured Replies

Hiya guys,

Well I'm experienced the problem the thread title suggests!

When I'm changing gear, not every gear, and not every time, most frequently fourth/fifth at 40mph above. When I lift my foot off the clutch the steering wheel does kind of a jerk, not to hard that I can't correct it or anything but definately noticeable.

What is the likely cause of this? I've got no clue, clutch slip? Worn suspension? Driveshaft?

HELP! ?

Cheers in advance

If the whole car jerks when you depress the clutch fast in 3rd/4th/5th etc. I would suspect the dogbone bush. Have you checked it lately?

If you really have 180PS with the original crappy voided TCA bushes -then that might be where your problem is coming from - but either way you are bound to experience a bit of torque steer if you welly it!

179.3 bhp my friend, and I've always heard the clutch is only good for 170?? could this be the cause of the problem?

It's not the whole car that jerks, only the steering wheel pulling. Not wanting to sound dumb but what exactly is a dogbone bush and where can I check it? and what I am looking for??

rum4mo mentioned the TCA bushes, which are also known as console or rear wishbone bushes. There's a guide on changing these in the technical guides section on the forum. If you're checking them try and look for any splits etc. The stock ones are voided, a lot of people change them for the ibiza cupra ones which aren't

Dogbone bush is right under the engine, I think you need to remove the under tray to see it. Its for stabilising the engine. I think it causes knocking noises when excessively worn. Again, there's a replacement guide in the technical guides section which will give you an idea of what it looks like

Are you talking about when you're pushing hard? as it could just be torque steer especially on uneven roads (Although i doubt it if its happening in 4th and 5th). If your clutch is struggling you'll be getting clutch slip (high revs, poor acceleration)

Also, might be worth checking your wheel alignment? If the car pulls slightly to one side, this can be exasperated under heavy throttle

My wheel alignment is out a wee bit. Will have a look for those TCA bushes tomorrow. How much do Ibiza Cupra ones cost?

prices are in the seat sticky on this forum mate :) be warned though ive heard they can be a bugger to fit if diying...

Finally got the car into the garage! Thought I'd wait until the service was up and only have it off the road for a day.

Anyway you guys were exactly right, it was the TCA bushes. Unfortunately I didn't ring my garage back in time to tell them to order Ibiza parts and they've been replaced by Skoda parts :thumbdwn:

Another side affect is they've completed knackered my front left tyre... which was almost brand new!! hey-ho, better than getting a flat I suppose. Replaced it with another TR-1. So the beast lives to fight another day.
