Manual v Auto Gearbox

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm thinking of buying a Superb 2.0 TDi 140 Elegance, I would like the Auto version but I've come across a good car but it has a manual box. I'm now in two minds what to do as I really wanted the Auto version.

I would like to hear comments regarding reliability of the Auto gearbox and comments in general of of the two gearboxes by people who actually drive the vehicles?

Please bear in mind I do a lot Miles as the vehicle will be a Taxi.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Its personal choice mate. I drove my dads is200 auto for a month and a half before i bought my current manual superb. It was a OK deal so i went for it however i must admit the auto for city driving is a God send. It is not as responsive as you dont have total control on gear shifts. I have been anti automatic for over 11 years. Although i am not totally converted, i do miss automatic transmission nowagain

I have never seen a 2.0TDi 140 Auto, thought they were only 1.9 or 2.5 TDi's that came with the option of the auto?

The 6 speed manual in the 140 is ok, bit of a cow when cold, and not much difference between 5th and 6th in ratios.

There isn't a 2.0 DTi auto mate, only either a 1.9 which was deleted in 2005 or a 2.5 V6 diesel, to give you some idea I cab a 1.9 DTi auto and she will do an average over the week of 26-30mpg mainly urban, straight 300 mile run unloaded gave 51mpg last week, loaded normally drops this to around 45mpg.

Off the mark she's ok, not slow by any means, as far as reliable goes I can't say I've had mine for 35k now and she had 50k on her when I got it, but when I did the coolant sensor a while back I noticed yellow crayon on the gearbox, whether they come from the factory like that or not I don't know, but I've a feeling it might be a replacement box prior to me owning it.

Thanks for the info.

The 2.0 140 TDi I referred was the 6 speed manual version. you were right to point out there is only a 1.9 or a 2.5 V6 engine size in auto.

Supurbia, you said you Cab an auto 1.9, if you were to replace your Cab, would you go for another auto or manual gearbox, also if you have any other comments on the Superb as a Cab I would be grateful the hear.

Auto all the way, it's about my 5th automatic cab, I switched to a manual two times before out of having to and hated it both times, that 20 quid it saves costs 50 quid by losing interest from fatigue, I'm in for a DSG next, nearly had one this week but sadly the car wasn't pukka so I cancelled it, as for the Superb as a cab, punters like the space in it, many can't get over that it's a Skoda, running cost wise it's been on par with my previous Vauxhall's for reliability and part costs, when you drive it it's almost like that old choc bar advert where the Rabbit says to whatever the other cartoon icon is.....where you going in such a hurry....etc, someone help me out with it it's something like a Twix advert, the car is just not a fussball, you drive and arrive without noticing, valium on wheels.
