Carbonio or other brand CAI "hydrolock" ??

Featured Replies

Well, I looked and read all over net bout this CAI "problem"....so what you guys think? Any problems with CAI in rain or when driven over large water on road..!?

Just some quote for hydrolock:

Hydrolock is when water or other moisture gets into your engine. Remember from high school science class, liquid isn't really compressible, while gas is? Air going into the engine can compress quite a bit, think compression ratio kind of stuff. When your intake sucks up water, it goes into the engine, and when the piston goes up, it can't compress the water like it compresses the air. What ends up happening, or can possibly happen, is since the piston can't go up, you get bent rods, stripped crankshafts, broken internals, etc.

I think it's quite possible for this, cuz filter is very near ground, but maybe i'm wrong...also moist and rain can come to filter throught bumper hole...

Since I'm writing this, can please users of Carbonio CAI tell me how loud this CAI is!? Don't wanna get lots of attention when driving normal or when crusing at high speed (max 170km/h) on highway, but when pumping some noise would be welcome :D

btw

Is Briskoda discount at Awesome-GTI also for me, I'm not from GB!?

THX

Regards,

Tomas

Tomas,

not heard one myslef but apparently it's louder than the ABD LAN and that's loud...I would say if you don't want draw attention then possible this isn't for you.

Hydrolock...........the filter is several inches from ground level so you would need to be driving in water up to this level to even get hydrolock. IIRC the filter is around the head light level which is around 8'' from the ground so....you need to be crossing quite a deep puddle. ;)

CAI are generally perfectly ok in heavy rain. I have a inlet for my CAI down in the front left hand bottom grill and have had no problems.

Discount at Awesome GTI is no more but this is because they have now lowered all their prices (I think this is correct). Doesn't mean you can't asking for some extra discount though. ;)

The carbonio is loud, very loud I'd say. No one has reported any problems with it sucking up water though, so I do not think you need to worry about it. That said, I am no mechanic, so if it does go bang, it wasn't me who told you that ;)

The briskoda discount at awesome GTI is at their discretion, so you would need to contact them in order to find out.

CAI's are fine in pouring rain - i ran on the Integra through winters and alsorts - no problem - and it was lower than the Carbonio i have on the Octy now.

As long as you are sensible, and don't go driving through Fjords (sp?) ;)

AEM do bypass valves but imo they are a waste of cash...

hydrolock

I can't find this in the dictionary...

I have a Carbonio CAI setup... and I would say that water ingress is scaremongering :(

Don't listen to the naysayers Tomas... put this issue to bed (and i speak through experience) !!!

(no responsibility taken blah balh blah :) )

Believe me - it can happen. However - with experience the filter (cone) has to be completely submerged before water ingress will occur.

...as I said in my post. ;)

a small bit of very fine water is good for the engine, not trying to thread-jack but does anyone have experience with water injection systems?? heard about them and they sound good but haven't talked to anyone that has had/used one

...mmmm

I'm not so worried bout "hydrolock", rain and moist is bigger "problem", especially when I've stucked behind car when its raining a lot and under his/her wheels comes a lot of water....

LOUDNESS...

...more loud than...errr...lets say Hondas VTi's with CAI or less....just want no noise when driving normal or sore ears when on highway at high speed, but when "pedal to the metal" then "bring the noise"....sort of speaking.. :D

IMO the carbonio is much quieter then the AEM CAI i had on the Integra.

Nice and GRRR when you boot it, lots of woosh under full boost when you release the pedal - but entirely silent whn cruising on motorway......

Best of both worlds....

...hehe, now that I like! Silence and suddenly big noise in case of needing pure BHP! :D

99% is sure that I'll buy Carbonio CAI; Awesome GTI is right address!?

do any other companies do the Carbonio ? only askin mind i've nothing against Awesome gti.

I've had no problems with mine taking in water and I have been through some prety big puddles over the past few months.

The carbonio CAI is quite loud but I wouldn't say it was intrusive at all, but then my last car was a 5 Turbo running a 21/2in bore side exit exhuast, that was loud, it use to set car alarms off, multi story carparks were fun. I miss it alot, I might have to get another one.
