Tremendous horrible noise at the roundabout - what to do?

Featured Replies

Yesterday evening I was returning from a family outing in my vRS when I stopped to give way at a roundabout. Due to a distraction I don't think I revved enough when I came to pull away as the car was loaded. I am not sure what has now gone wrong with the car as it moved forward a small way (few inches) and then there was an almighty BANG from under the car - like I had driven onto a rock. At this point the car was stopped at the entrance to the roundabout and after the bang we were all shaken. Luckily the road was quiet so we had time to compose ourselevs.

I (perhaps wrongly) tried to restart the engine and to our shock it started and seemed to run fine. I am still very worried though.

Any ideas what the terrible noise was? I am most concerned that something has gone amiss.

Thank you for any ideas - I am at a loss.

Nothing to worry about. Just a stall

The first day I got my vrs I was so distracted with playing with the new toys that I tried to set off in 5th. When you stall these modern PD engines it makes a massive noise and I don't think it's anything to worry about :D

Hello Tailhappy,

As said, not to worry, anything serious will soon show it's ugly head.

You must have stalled a car in the past, and heard an unusual noise?

Best regards.

Thank you for the replies.

So the noise was just a stalling noise?!! I have never head such a sound from an engine - that should be in the handbook on the first page as a warning. It was bad enough for me to get out and lift the bonnet and shine a torch all around and underneath...

Yes, I have stalled my 105 many times :o but it goes 'chug' and just stops. Come to think of it, I don't think I have stalled my Fabia before yesterday...

That noise shook me up.

Definetely sounds like it should do some damage.

Only issue caused in my experience was when i had a wet trainer slip of the clutch at a junction and my other half shot out of her seat and hit her head on the roof!

I tried to pull off in 3rd on a round about and there was a bang. I thought someone had gone into the back of us.

Glad I am not the only one who has been shocked at the noise.

I've only stalled my PD130 once on my driveway. I got out thinking there would be bits of engine lying underneath the bang was that bad. Of course it was fine and still is 2 years later!

Try hard not to do this again  The almighty bang is kickback from the 24:1 compression and the shock goes right through the transmission. Good way to kill the DMF as well.

I had this happen to me once when I just had the car, and it sure shakes you up a tad ;)

It is incredibly loud isn't it :)

Just stalled my Xantia Hdi trying to move off in 3rd at the traffic lights on the way home.

Sounded as though the engine was actually being ripped from its mountings.

Don't worry unduly, just try not to make a habit of it ey? ;)
