Advice on buying my first diesel Octavia

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I had mistakenly posted this on the welcome sections for new members and got lots of friendly hello's but no responses to the query, hence the re post.

I am about to convert to the darkside and buy my first diesel, having spent ages researching I've decided on an Octavia in Elegance trim. The thing that I'm not sure of is whether to buy the 1.9 130bhp or the 2.0 140, confusingly they appear to have been manufactured at the same time. Can anyone advise on the merits of either, I'm coming from a Volvo S60 T5 SE upgraded to 300bhp so power is important. I'm ditching the Volvo as I've just been stiffed to the tune of £2,000 for the ABS/DTSC control units and it's turned the ownership experience sour. Also 15mpg is painful and I want to savour the previously unknown joys of economy.

Also where is the best place to buy, car supermarkets seem to have some good ex fleet cars and mileage isn't a worry as I only cover about 3-4K a year. Any advice gratefully recieved.

The Octy II has the 1.9 105bhp or 2.0 140bhp in the Elegance trim. I think the 1.9 130bhp was only in the Octy I. The Skoda network can offer good deals on used cars with some warranty.

if power is a big thing why not got for the vRS TDi 170bhp (remaps to 200bhp no problem) and will still do 50mpg on a good run?

or if your a volvo man, have you considered the S60 D5? lovely car and you still get that really nice 5 cylinder warble :)

as for the 1.9 130 and 2.0 140, from what i've read there both tunable to similar levels but id be tempted to look at 2.0 140 and by an approved used skoda car

A 1.9 130bhp engine would mean a Mk1 Octavia. There was a period while you could still get them alongside the 2.0 140bhp Mk2.

Both are good cars though I'd suggest a Mk2 is the one to go for.

Thanks for responding so quickly, it would appear that I was mistaken in thinking that mark 2's were available with both engines. I think the 140 brake mark 2 is the one, would love the VRS 170 but out of my reach. I have between 5-6K which would seem to net an 05 or high mile 06. I thought about the Volvo D5 but having been spanked so severely on the T5 I've been put off the brand. The recent showing in the JD Power survey has sold me on the Octavia.

Consistant podium places and has just usurped Lexus as a manufacturer is some going and owner's seem to love em. As much as I love cars and performance it's no good if it won't start in the morning. This car seems to be cake and eat it, better reliability and satisfaction ratings than the parent company's Audi's and Vee Dubs.

Would love to hear from some owners with what to look out for, general tips etc.

Many thanks - Mr K.

I abused my 140 PD Octy 2 with DSG with a passion and did around 35k in two years without any major problems. The exhaust pressure sensor issue reared its ugly head (see other posts on the forum) for the second time in two Octy's that I've had but other than that, it was a great car. I've upgraded to the diesel 170 that you say you can't afford and it's the dog's danglies. Gives good mpg too when it's not being driven enthusiastically and it has DSG too.

You are about right on what you'll get for your money.

I'm considering changing my car now and was offered £5500 today for my 06 2.0TDI that's done 70k as a part-ex , so your £6k budget would get you something a tiny bit older , or a bit higher mileage if you wanted an Elegance spec one.

If you didn't mind a few less toys then you'll get a newer Ambiente for your cash.

As for what to look out for , one big thing to check is the turbo. Despite what the surveys say , quite a few cars have had these go (mine died at 56k) and that would be a large bill to fix out of warranty. They make a sound a bit like a police siren if you rev the engine and in the months before mine went this noise got louder. Trouble is with nothing to compare it to and a dealer that will say "they all do that" you'll find it hard to predict a failure.

Other than that the only octavia specific fault that comes to mind is loud wind noise from the rear windows which can be fixed by a simple adjustment.

Any more info on the fix for this? I just bought a 55 plate 2.0TDI Elegance and its the only major niggle with what I hope will be a great car.

Cant get it under 50mpg at the moment! Everything else seems fine, its covered 50k, just the wind noise to fix and fit some sort of MP3/Ipod adapter as my stereo doesnt play MP3s sadly.

There's a couple of threads on here somewhere that a search will turn up.

The proper fix is to take the door card off and adjust the fixed glass window somehow.

The other option is a bit of silicon sealant round the seam :)

Hi,

Whilst looking at Octavia's to buy I came across a PD 140 Sport - can anyone tell me how this differs from the Elegance. Previously I could only find info on the Classic, Ambiente, Elegance and the Laurin and Klement models. Also I see that Superchips can chip the 140 up to 177bhp - anyone done this?

I'd much rather have an Elegance than a Sport. I think the Sport spec is a bit disapointing. I had a PD105 Elegance for 3.5 years and it's the best car I've ever owned. The economy was stunning and the performance more than adequate.

The sport is basically an Ambiente with a body kit and different alloys. Not sure whether the suspension is different.

It doesn't have climate control , cruise control , auto-dimming rear mirrors , rear electric windows , arm rest/jumbo box thing and a few other bits and pieces.

I know what I'd rather have.

Sport does have rear Electric Windows :P

If its comfort/toys then go for an Elegance or L&K

Oh, the sport has lowered suspension, so slightly firmer ride

Pm'ed you back fella

Cheers

Damian

I had a PD105 estate as a curtesy car. The performance won't rearrange your face like a VRS but it was perfectly adequate and a genuinely nice car to drive. Handling wasn't a million miles different from my TFSI but obviously softer.

Thats surely a joke?! Yes they are reasonably quick but don't get carried away.

I see you have the German sense of humour installed

Someone with VAG-COM might be able to change the settings for you. Not sure where it plugs in though ;)

Check out auto trader, you will find a 170 there within your budget, even ebay has some with sat nav included

Can't find a 170 for less than 8K, most are nearer 10K, got my Volvo up for sale so here's hoping for a buyer. Happy to buy the 140 and chip it up.
