Burning Oil Smell On Start Up?

Featured Replies

Have had my Fabia vRS now nearly three years..and chuffed.

But have noticed recently that when it's cold on startup there is a burning oil smell.

As I said earlier I have had it now nearly three yrs from new and can honestly sayhave not thraped it or pushed it to the extreme-I do have a bit of fun in it at times but with the coppers around so much recently it aint worth it.

Also I have never had a diesel before now-so is this a trait of the diesel engine when it's cold?

Cheers folks:)

Burning oil or exhaust smog? You usually smell a bit off exhaust if the wind is blowing towards the back of the car or reversing. Also you can check under the bonnet for oil leaks dripping onto drive belts. You'll have to determine where the smell is coming from 1st.

Is it using any oil ATM, i.e is the oil level going down? If it isn't I'm sure it will be OK, unless I'm very much mistaken. I agree with the above, have a look around the engine for leaks, I know it's hard with the plastic under-tray.

My car gives a puff of smoke when starting from cold, I guess that's normal for a Diseasel.

It's a charactoristic of a diesel when the weather is only just warm enough to stop the glowplugs cycling, or when they're a bit old. Look for a puff of white smoke from the exhaust as well.
