Cambelt change interval?

Featured Replies

Our Fabia 1.2HTP 12V is just coming up to 4 years old and has done just over 20,000 miles.

When should the cambelt (and tensioner) be replaced?

I see lots of conflicting info about how many years and how many miles.

Alright, info i have is.

Every 60 000 miles.

Skoda specify timing belt inspection after the first 60 000 miles and then every 20 000 miles until the renewal interval of 120 000 miles. However if the vehicle is used mainly for short journeys, we recommend that this shorter renewal interval is adhered to. The belt renewal interval is very much up to the owner, but bearing in mind that severe engine damage will result if the belt brakes in use, and because of this skoda uk recommend the shorter interval date.

Just get the belt checked to make sure it isn't looking to crusty. Becuase the car is 4 years old and only done 20 000 miles, its obviosly not being used much, so if you are at all unsure about the condition of the belt (and you've got some spare cash) just get it done.

Some people on here also recommend getting the water pump done at the same time because you need to take the belt off to get into it. So if that goes before your next belt renewal, you will be paying for a new belt before you need to, and the pump is relatively cheap.

I could be wrong but I think the 1.2 is a chain and not a belt, thus meaning it shouldn't need replacing unless its really rattly. Sure someone will correct me if needed.

It's chain driven with a hydraulic tensioner which is fed from the lubrication system. The oil capacity is not that much, so the best thing you can do is check it on a regular basis.

Thanks all... I didn't think the card from the local Skoda dealer saying "your cambelt needs changing" was correct.
