Further progress... Just grinding, welding, and finishing off to do I think.

Outbid on the white fav by a matter of £19 :( oh well.

Hmmm I hope it passes the MOT....

I think I'd have probably had new inner wings welded in rather than trying to patch them up, then coated them with some form of plastic or epoxy based paint to prevent future rust issues.

omg that welding is shocking, make sure you get in there with a spray can or paint or whatever to cover it all up

 I did better than that on my first attempt with Dad teaching.

Hope you didn't pay too much for that anewman.

It was arc welded :S I think that's why it's such a mess. Problem was I asked my uncle about it and he got all enthusiastic about helping then and I couldn't stop him. Oh well.

I'll have to get myself a decentish second-hand gas mig welder at some point and have a practice on some scrap.

ooooh arc is way too strong... oxy acetalene .. (however it's spelt) or mig is what you need for that

I was being polite and not saying anything about the welds, but I don't see how they could be strong enough to take the cars weight in that state. What is the price on the whole inner wing from either skoda or other sources?

Sorry to hear about the corrosion and outbid by £19 on eBay is a bummer!!!!

Try JayBidWatcher for eBay. You can bid right down to the last 5secs and it's free. :-)

You should look out for a good deal though. My ex-wife just let our P-reg Felicia go for £350 It only had 50k on the clock and the bodywork was mint for it's age.

Skoda are unlikely to provide them anymore as they've stopped giving parts support for the favorit. They were listed on Butts website at £120 each side excl vat (although they no longer sell Skoda parts (are selling off their stock on ebay). I could only find outer wings from other sources. I suspect the car isn't that popular enough for third party mfr's to be bothered.

BiGRUD - thanks for the pointer to Jbidwatcher. In fact I just installed it on Kubuntu linux :)

I wish I'd paid £150 now lol.

If it passes will almost definitely be gotten rid of in the next year, will be on the look out for something else.

They're how much

At that price I'd say find one with good bodywork and swap over any parts you want to or find a new car.

£120 per inner wing is crazy money as you'd be looking at £350-400 by the time you'd paid somebody to weld it all in properly.

I'm hoping you'll stick with the Favorit as I'm learning more about quirks of my car from your experiences.

On the other hand the scavenger in me is thinking hmmmmmm

Much as you may want to keep it running there comes a point where you have to stop throwing money at it. Maybe Dave might be able to tell you where to source parts for a more reasonable price, but otherwise spending more than the car is worth on it to get it back tip top in that area, seems a bit daft.

Thats why we're Enthusiast. Would there be a forum like this if we didn't spend money on our cars.

I guess if inner wings were available then Ken wouldn't be getting his inner wings patched and strengthened (if you look at his posts over on skoda-forum.com you'll see no effort is spared in improving his car).

Retest at 2.30pm, wish me luck, lol. If it passes I'll be rushing off to buy tax. If it fails I think I'll be getting the yellow pages out and calling scrappies, starting to strip parts, and probably off to buy a jerry can to try save some of the petrol..

That's all well and good, but when the cars are 10 a penny on the trader/ebay etc, then there is no point fixing one up with a body that is shot. Far better to find one with a good body and even if the mechanicals are shot you can swap your good mechanicals over into the good body.

Rust will always win once it has got started properly and as can be seen from these pictures it is IMHO less started and more almost finished.

Yeah I'm quite surprised they didn't spot any of it on the worst side on the last MOT. It can't have gotten that bad in 12 months. The car's got quite a lot of miles on the clock as well (not sure how many as the last clock stopped working (I'd guess 130-140k), so I'd probably do better to find one something like the white one that was on ebay recently.

It's a pass :orb_phew: off to tax now. Think it's time to look for another or maybe something different in the next year though.

Nice one. I have a spot on my rear left and front right mounts that will need plating at some point. Not as bad as your's though. At least I know test centres will pass plated points like this.

Glad your Favorit is still on the road!!!

It was all sprayed with zinc primer, and a very old tin of dried out underseal was used (after being heated up on the oven it softened enough to apply then dried really quickly once on the car.) [Edit: I have just read some MOT testers like to be able to see the weld and don't like underseal etc being applied]. One side was plated from the inside as it was easier to do that than take the wing off (the bit shown in the first picture on this page). The MOT man said prior to doing this that being plated on the inside would be ok. I'd prefer it to have been mig welded myself, but if it's a pass I'll take it :D
