If you go for a mild map with better economy thrown in, the standard clutch and DMF kit will be fine. You just have to make sure not to boot it below 2,000 RPM.

SMF kit causes the gearbox to rattle like a bag of spanners at idle, not a problem if all you want is raw power, but annoying as hell if you like a quiet car.

OEM clutch and DMF used to be close in price to custom bits, but at £270 for the OEM bits, it's a no brainer. Job can be done in 3 to 4 hours DIY, so even if you need to do it again 50K down the road, no big deal, and still a lot cheaper.

well i can have the flywheel lightened over at my local engine company anyway

You can buy a lightened DMF aswell, may be a thought.

The problem I would expect doing that, is the DMF mass is part of the damping formula to smooth out torque peaks at low revs. If you lighten the DMF the torque damping frequency will shift, which sort of kills what the DMF is designed to do.

What a tuning company would need to do, is measure the torque spike frequency on standard car, and then measure again after remap. Then calculate the amount of material to remove from the DMF to get the same frequency damping.

VAG gearboxes are not the strongest boxes by a long way, and the differential crown wheel is riveted to the diff carrier. Not the best scenario if you have torque spikes hammering at the gears, although some people seem to get away with it.
