Question about fuel cap

Featured Replies

Just back from the USA and the rental car i had the engine light came on, apparently caused by a loose petrol cap! Do our euro cars TFSI register fault codes if the caps are loose or is this a USA thing?

Would anyone on here admit to leaving their fuel cap off?

The handbook doesn't mention it, except,

that the outer flap is linked to the central locking system,

so perhaps that might trigger the door open warning light?

There's only one way to find out for sure, but I wouldn't recommend testing the theory.

cheers ... Darren

American Cars are built for Idiots (Quite fitting) and they seem to have some sort of chime/buzzer/beep for every possible situation to let the driver know what a total tosspot he or she is.

If you change the Fabia instrument cluster to USA in VCDS (Funny becuz there not sold there) it will beep when you open the drivers door for no reason at all

I think Jeremy Clarkson noticed this in a car, beleive he said it was to remind americans they are getting into a car

Maybe engine management system monitors fuel pressure? Only way I could see that leaving the filler cap off would affect the engine warning light.

I was reading it up a little since. Something to do with the EVAP system if it loses pressure due to loose cap. The americans don't want petrol fumes leaking into the atmosphere. Not sure if and where the sensor is.

The Octi2 doesn't have a door open sensor on the fuel flap. I let the wifey practice her refueling on my car once and sure enough I drove home with everything hanging off the side.

It's a closed loop fuel system thing to reduce fuel vapors released to atmosphere. Most brands will throw a code if you don't put the fuel cap on tight.

In AUS we have ratcheting caps (turn and click), most of the manufacturers recomend screwing the cap on then "over-tightening" 3 clicks.

You don't have this type of anti-pollution measures in the UK?

The cap does click when overtightened, but it didn't throw off any errors when driving with it hanging on the side.

We do but cars over here are sold on performance or price, they're very rarely sold on their safety or environmental specification. The closest we get to environmental specification in the showroom is normally 'and its in a low VED band because of its low emissions*'.

* 'because of its low emissions' is optional in most cases :rotz:

VED = Vehicle Excise Duty / Car Tax for the non UK'ers.

Like a lot of things, it's all propaganda and the truth is somewhere else.

They don't get "sold" because of their environmental "performance" (except to the odd few private buyers & gov't departments are getting all excited about CO2 emmissions as well). The anti-pollution stuff is mandated by our compulsory Design Rules.

The best US rental cars I've had have been Toyotas and Mitsubishis. The worst, by a long way, were American designed cars. Still, I do like their roads!
