write off???

Featured Replies

i was rear ended yesterday while waiting at roundabout , the car that hit me was doing around 50 mph on impact (so the police claim) he has been cautioned for driving without due care and attention and has admitted liability so no probs there , buy the rear of my car is a mess , the exhaust is where the rear lights should be , and my tailgate as a 1inch gap all the way round .....but my boot floor is really quite badly crumpled nearly up to the spare wheel well , will this make it a write off , its a 03 octy rs for the record :rotz:

Hope you, and any passengers?, are ok

This all depends on the value of the car and the cost to repair the damage. A car is written-off if the repairs cost at least 60% of the value of the car. You will need to wait to see what the engineer says who assesses your car as to whether it is repairable or not.

Hope your claim is assessed and finalised as smoothly as possible. Just a note on courtesy cars - you are entitled to a courtesy car through the other party's insurers. If your car is written off make sure you check how long you are entitled to the courtesy car because if you go over you will incur hire costs of the vehicle.

hi thanks for reply , no passengers in car luckily and i just have whiplash and a sore ankle , i will check about courtesy car thanks for the tip , just hoping its not a write off and can be repaired but we will have to see , will keep updated as and when things happen

The other thing to bear in mind when calculating repair costs is that the insurance company will base their estimate on a number of things...

1 - cost of actual repairs using main dealer parts and labour

2 - cost of a replacement hire car for the period of the repair.

Generally if the boot floor is crumpled, the car will have to go on a jig to be straightened again, which takes time and is very expensive, so it will probably be written off.

You can always offer to buy it back off them (usually dirt cheap) and then get it repaired yourself using second hand parts and "mates rates" ;D

For an 03 Octavia vRS... I'd say yes, write off sadly :(

What he said.

When the boot floor is badly crumpled there's no way it'll be fixed to insurance standards for a sensible price.

Maybe a write-off, though I had an A3 repaired a few years back with similar sounding damage- it had to be jigged, and repairs were £3800 at a VAG bodyshop, and the car was probably only worth 6.5-7k at best.

An 03 Octavia vRS is probably worth about £3,000 though :(

You're probably right.

Take the money from the insurers and then ask if you can buy it back. Then either fix it or strip it and sale the good bits.

We had our A4 written off in very similar circumstances took the payout bought it back and repaired it. Drove it for a bit then sold it for the cost of the repair! HAd to have a VIC check though.

Also as much as it goes against the grain, get a medical and claim for the injuries as well. I didn't and my neck and shoulder regularly causes me trouble.

Hope this helps.

i have the person at faults insurance co comin to see me monday and dealing with them direct , they have admitted fault and asked me to settle out of court for injuries which i am tempted to do as i cant be arsed going through the lengthly procedure plus i already have a claim going through from before xmas , they are sending me a replacement car which they said i can have until mine is either repaired or replaced , and adr are picking mine up monday too , anyone had experience with adr ??

As a bit of a rough guide, I was rear ended coming onto the M1 a couple of years ago. My car (Mazda6 at the time) was hit at about 50mph by a Fiat Punto. It totally destroyed the front end of the Punto.

Mine was drivable and had what appeared to be a cracked bumper. When it got to the garage they found the back end had been crumpled by about an inch and the door shuts were more or less closed up at the rear.

Didn't look all that bad, yet still cost £6300 to put right.

Based on that, I'd say yours is a gonner :(

why are they coming to see you.. they dont need to and have no reason to do so apart from check your injuries

i would personally only deal with them through my insurance company and have the sum they intend to pay you for the injury in writing and until such time .... carry the claim through court....

do not trust these people the last thing they want to do is pay out so watch your back:thumbup:

Another :+1:

Leave it to the insurance co's to sort, and your legal cover (assuming you took it out). Times like this the extra £5-30 becomes worth it.
