i think my water pump is packing in octy vrs

Featured Replies

my 52 plate silver octy vrs its been fine up till last night its done 75000 miles , i jumped on the motorway last night for a short journey and with in two mins the temp gauge had gone well past its normal 90 mark , so i got off at the junction and let it cool down a bit a check my levels , all my levels were ok , so i turned round to come home on normal roads its fine till i get on the motor way and just before i got off the m way the red dash symbol came on and the alarm bell so looks like the water pumps had it , but not sure to stick with oem part or a metal impeller one:confused:

OEM is modified and warrantied for two years, gets my vote.

I bought a metal impeller one - turned out on delivery it was faulty!

Ended up fitting a new OEM one.

But if Lummox recommends them I am very comfortable having the OEM pump.

is this what happens when the water pump goes?

Could easily be the thermostat sticking closed. This is exactly what happened to my old polo and it was just the 'stat.

I'd definitely check the 'stat before changing the water pump as that is a big job.

Cheers,

yeh i was going to suggest checking minor stuff before changing the pump. are these usually the symptoms of a water pump though?

It can be, depends on how stuck closed it is. Mine had seized partially closed so a small amount of water was still getting past. The effect was that it was just about okay at low speeds/revs but couldn't manage to cool the engine at higher speeds.

It was closed enough though that the simple 'hot pipe in, cold pipe out' test still showed up the problem. When the engine approached overheating, the pipe that feeds into the 'stat was too hot to touch while the exit pipe was mildly warm.

Easy test to do before spending £200 on labour.

thank you very much

I was worried about what kind of condition my water pump would be in at 54k miles.

So when i had the cambelt done i asked them to change it for me for a new OEM one.

The reply i got was "we always check the water pump when doing the cambelt, but will not change it unless it needs to be changed".

I pointed out the fact i was worried that they are prone to failure but they reassured me it would not need changing unless there was a problem with the one currently on the car.

So i had my cambelt done and still have the old water pump on as they checked it and it was fine after 54k miles.

Maybe it's just the luck of the draw with the water pump, failing on some but not others.

I wouldn't go back to a garage that would not do what I wanted. It's all very well them saying it's fine but if goes 6 months down the line they get more money to take the belt off again and replace the pump.

My tyre place didn't understand that I was changing my tyres with about 3mm of tread left, they did the job but continually questioned my reasons. They couldn't get their heads round the fact that I had no confidence in them and couldn't get them off fast enough.

im changing it the week end any way its due for the cam belt anyway so i will hopfully kill 2 birds with 1 stone :)

I know the water pump is something that needs to be looked at for the RS, is it the same for my 1.6? I have asked them to check the water pump when they do the cam belt, the car is nearly 7 years old on the original belt - only done 54K though. The garage haven't advised me to do the belt until 60K, although I am worried due to the age of it!

i thought it was every 4 years for a cam belt? or 40000 miles

 Does it vary for each model? Thought the 1.6 was 60K - thats what my garage was saying and haynes says. Although I am very concerned about the age of it so I thought I best get it changed now - even though the garage wasn't as concerned.

just a bit of a update fitted water pump . i removed it to day and the impeller was cracked and split from the shaft , but the only problem is i have changed it and fitted a good year timing belt kit that i got from a mate and the bolt that holds the main tensioner pulley on the blank is to long and is making a awfull noise:mad: so hoping to get a new repace ment , i hate doing jobs twice

My 4x4 has done 95k, it started making a ticking noise that eminated from the cam belt side of the engine. Not having the full history of the car, I got the belt & water pump changed at a local indipendent garage. (£240) I supplied a new metal impellered water pump. I was lucky! the belt could be moved back and fore about 3-4" - Quote "Bloody hell mate!! Worst belt I've ever seen!!"

The water pump only had a third of the impeller left too! Back flushed the cooling system and managed to get the majority of it back out.

Post change the engine runs a lot better now!

:)
