Brake Problem - Update - Advice needed

Featured Replies

Go for a drive and see if they start to bind. Best thing is to pull up, pull the pipe off and then see if the car then rolls freely, got a pretty good feeling there is an issue with your servo.

To pin point a problem with the hydraulic brake system you need to start at the furthest point away from the sticking brake and work towards it.

With to brake stuck on undo the master cyl brake pipe, if the brake does not release you have elliminated the master cyl, servo etc.

Follow the brake pipe to the ABS/ASR valve, first undo the inlet, try the brake, if still stuck then undo the outlet.

If still stuck, carry on to the flexi pipe, inlet first.... if still stuck undo the bleed screw if the brake releases then its your flexi pipe.

Hope its not your ABS/ASR valve playing up, but if it is it may be worth bleeding the system with the ignition on and the ASR turned off to see if that helps.

any news garry? have you replaced the brake flexis? bleed the abs system?

Sadly no :(

I have now fitted 2 genuine Skoda Master cylinders. Mike from Impossible was a Legend and did a home call for me and checked it all over himself at my workshop. We checked the ABS system and could use the ABS pump to free off the brakes one at a time, but then when you hit the peddle again they lock. The lines are all clear and free. Calipers are good.

I took the servo out last night as a last resort as im getting desperate now :(

That was a pig of a job to do. Boost pipes off, Power steering resevior out the way, remove PS lines, Remove cam belt cover, undo OS engine mount, drop engine etc.... 5 hours later and its out. Looks okay but how can i be sure? Most odd. Will prob change it as a matter of course now.

how you getting on with this Garry?

I picked up a doner Servo from my friend who is breaking an R32 yesterday. Given the lovely weather were having today I decided to have a BBQ rather than go to the workshop and work on my car. So hopefully I will head down their tomorrow and get it all fitted and see if it cures it. Fingers Crossed.

I'm quite looking forward to getting him back on the road now, been having to go everywhere in Hannahs race prepared Mini is starting tire me out, LOL.

Will keep you posted.

Garry

lets hope this cures it mate! I can understand how it mush feel not havin your baby there.

Another little update.

Last night we fitted the R32 brake servo. Despite the part numbers being the same the master cylinder mounts were completely different so we had to fit the R32 master cylinder also. Not a major drama as all the lines attach the same so all is well. So far :)

We ran out of time to get the compressor out and start bleeding the brakes through (was around 2am when we called it a day) so will be heading back over their tonight to bleed the brakes (for possibly the 1000th time, lol) and see if it has cured it.

On a side note, i would expect that the R32 master cylinder has a larger piston inside to move more fluid to suit the larger brakes, in which case i am expecting to have a rather short peddle travel and very sensitive brakes. Think it will need to source the R32 brakes now to complete the transformation :)

lol lets hope it sorts it mate.

Would of been easier buyin a R32 lol. mind the way its goin you nearly there lol

Keep me posted :D

I with my new R32 Master Cylinder and Servo im thinking i wont have the long peddle problem they have been speaking about. Time will tell tho :)

Garry

They think its to do with adjustment on the hand brake as this solved a similar problem on another car.

Well looks as if ill be changing my sig soon. Cannt wait

whats the size of the r32 master cylinder, 23.8mm?

whats the standard vrs/octavia size?

  • Author

Sound good, be sure to keep us posted :)

Im not sure on the size of either i am afraid, only info i have is that im told its bigger, Thats about the extent of my knowledge im afraid and im not sure how to find out for sure.

Kind Regards

Garry

arnt the R32 breaks 323mm or somthing similar? with 2 pot front callipers?

those lambo ones look small for the car? but spose they are 4pots.

billy

Just buy an R32 and have done with it lol.

Hope you get it sorted :)

  • Author

It would have been cheaper, lol.

And this is my "Practical" car, lol. Never ending is it, lol.

Now where has he left that Haldex......

mk4 r32 are something like 334mm diameter i think, bigger than the lcr which is 323mm.

  • Author

Yeah, i have 334 in my head for some reason.

Sadly my mate is keeping the brakes for his MK2 or i would have had them too :D
