Roomster Petrol 1.6 - a bit noisy

Featured Replies

Hi my wife has a 1.6 Roomster, she loves it but i find when driving over 50mph that the engine is really quite harsh and noisy, almost as if it has no sound deadening fitted.

Is this normal for this engine?

Its even more noisy and brash than my diesel fabia vrs!

I've never found that engine to be particularly noisy?

What are the engine revs?

What are you/she comparing it with?

John

After 3000 rpm engine noise is problem, I've tested all the engine types.

The cars based on B segment have all the same engine noise problem.

It's almost silent at idle but when you rev it (which you have to in order to get the best out of them) they are quite noisy. Roll on TSI replacements!

Our 1.6 Scout is OK. See separate post (somewhere....) re road noise on some surfaces at m'way speeds but mechanical noise low otherwise although engine becomes more noticeable above 3000 rpm.

I have to agree; the 1.6 engine gets a bit raucous over 3,000rpm.

Still it make a change to be able to rev it to 5,500-6,000rpm (compared to my Octy TDI).

Can't speak for the 1.6 but the 1.4 16v engines that I have had in Roomster and Fabia 2 courtesy cars were very noisy when revved. Settled down at a cruise to some extent but a very harsh engine when worked hard. Conversely the 1.6 FSI in the Octy was very refined.

I'm not sure what "revving it to get the best out of it" means?

I haven't noticed any problems with noise but then I don't gun the engine, just accelerate as evenly as possible.

I do get a bit of noise accelerating from a standing start but can't say it has been an issue

I expected my 1.6 tiptronic to be quiet after my old diesel Spacewagon but I wasn't prepared for just how quiet it is. I drove my wife's Mazda 2 auto last week and I couldn't believe how noisy it was after mine.

I have just had my Roomster 1.6 SE for two weeks. I quite like the "sporty" engine noise. I do not think it is too raucous. It tells you it is there and working. Many motorcycle riders change there exhausts to noisier ones, for the same reason. So I am ok with the noise

The previous post's reference to "sporty" engine noise is interesting - our 1.6 has a not unpleasant hint of growl to it when pushed.

Engine notes can sound "good" or "bad" and if it's audible then it's always better to have something intereresting to listen to! Contrast the awful drone of the Mondeo tdci diesel which I had to endure for 70k. Orrible.

exact the same in my Roomster Scout 1.4 16v ;)

Well I have to say that I am aware of the engine when accelerating hard, but generally after nearly 3 months I still can't believe how quiet the Roomster is. I wonder if the engine sound is more obvious to some because the rest of the car is so quiet with scarecely any road or wind noise.

I keep the radio low and only have to increase the volume very slightly at speed.

It's not noisy when installed in the MKIV Golf/Bora, and I dont even remember the Lupo/Polo GTI being as noisy and as crude as it is

I think its a lack of soundproofing, its very quiet until 3k rpm, unless its the design of the exhaust
