Help and advice needed on a ABD CAI and fitting

Featured Replies

Hi I have purchased an ABD cold air intake 2nd hand of ebay and have received it this morning, on the listing is stated it would fit a 1.8t 20v (there were no pics on the listing) I am unsure if the cai kit is complete. I have taken some photos of the kit and filter i received can anyone tell me if there are items missing ie nuts , bolts pipes etc as i thought the filter sat near the bottom of the bumper? Also im slightly dissapointed as the filter looks pretty rusty in some areas, is this the original ABD filter ? and can it be replaced and how much?

I am going to have a go and fit this this weekend if anyone has some fitting tips for this ABD cai and advice removing the standard air box it would be much appreciated.

My car is a 2003 mk1 vrs octy

Just out of intrest how much is the above ABD kit new?

Looks about complete to me. Once you have fitted it, you once see the filter. Speaking from experience, if you can afford the time to spend quarter of an hour removing the bumper shell, it'll make your life a whole lot easier. This is done by removing the black plastic insert rubbing strip and undo the nuts either side. Then remove all the torque screws (including a couple behind the two side grills).

Your old airbox removes easily and you use the stud on the inner wing (which currently helps hold the airbox in place) to bolt the CAI tube in place. Don't do this up too tightly and the tube needs to be able to move with the engine. You can't really go wrong, just make sure the filter cone isn't likely to rub on metal work. As for the filter, you can by any sort of cone filter that will fit the tube diameter, if you're looking to replace, but don't get one you need to oil; oil droplets sucked up the CAI can damage the MAF element.

Hope this helps

I used it when fitting my non carbonio cai and it helped immensely

Thanks for all the help , i have had a look and it seems like im a hose missing from the cai for the secondary air pump supply( the picture with the black rubber bung fitted) ???. I will use the air filter i have with the kit and give it a good clean , How much will a replacement cone filter be approx or will the supplied filter be ok?

No your not missing a hose, as the hose that comes from the secondary air filter fits to the CAI when you remove the black rubbed bung, just alter the angled piece that is already fitted to the hose and it will fit the CAI.

Re the air filter, I used the GREEN one, it was about 10" x 8" and worked really well, but the K&N also work well, but with the K&N ones do not over oil them, as it will effect the MAF.

The secondary air pump line should just clip on to the cai where the bung is.

As for the filter you have linked to my advice is spend some money on a quality filter like k&n, cotton green or piperX. I have had issues with cheap cone filters and now have a pipercross PK7000 universal cone on my cai and it is excellant.

Cheap filters do not work well at all :thumbdwn:

what your missing is the silicone hose that you can see in beretta picture to connect the secondary to the cai other that that all there...

for some reason they dont come with that piece of silicone anymore speak to mike at ip he may have one...

so in short yes you are missing the small piece of silicone tube:thumbup:

also they now use a straight piece for the bigger silicone where as mine and beretta one is actually stepped down

price wise new i think £180 then shipping so not cheap but a brilliant piece of kit you will love it

Yep second that, missing a small silicon hose plus circlips.

The kit is superb, and takes the cold air right from the front lower section behind the bumper..

I have a K&N filter. I have heard that the standard filter is not that good.(looks poor in your pic)

To fit you can remove the passenger headlight and the lower bumper grill to allow better access. (could also remove bumper , though a little overkill) True it is rather cramped if you try and lower the cold air pipe with filter attached. I dropped down the filter first through the headlight opening and let it rest on the bottom plastic splash guard. Then I lowered the cold air pipe to the filter and rested it down beside the battery. Then fitted the filter onto the pipe whilst holding it in place (hand through the bumper grill).

My CAI does not have the second air pump pipe, instead it came with a small filter to go straight onto the original pipe.

Here you can see how the bumper trim is removed(bolts behind the trim) should you take off the bumper

Here you can see the air filter in place underneath the inner wing.

Looking good! Always been tempted by one of these, but the filter location and cost always put me off.

Well just an update i fitted my kit yesterday when the weather was nice and sunny it took me about 1 1/2 hours , I had raw knuckles and forearms after due to the limited space when fitting the cone filter. I went for a short spin around and I am well impressed with the induction sound and put a big smile on my face which unfortunatly did not last very long.

I decided to be 100 percent honest like i am and inform my insurance company very shortly after, When i informed them They wanted approx £100 plus an admin charge for the remaining 9 months i have left on the policy,

Which i feel is very unreasonable as the rest of the car is totally standard (apart from a Cg lock on seat belt) plus i have 8 years protected ncd with a clean licence.

I told them i would put it back to standard now (as i can not afford to pay that as i have just been made redundant ) - but told me because i have just told them or declared it to them they can not change it back they still wanted the money else and would invalidate my insurance!!!!, I now have the task today in the rain of putting the standard air box on before i can drive my car insured again, In shortl im pretty ****ed off as its took me about 3 months to sorce a second hand ABD cai and the overal expense and time. So i am now keeping the car 100 percent standard. seems like honesty really does get you no where, I did not relise it would cost so much for one mod, So my other hopes of a ecu remap , boost gauge etc are also out the window too.

I am tempted to remove my CG lock as they would probably class that as a performance mod too. As the lady from the insurer said an modification to the car other than standard no matter how slight will invalidate my insurance in the event of any claim they would not pay out-. So said the insurance I am paying would be a waste of money!!

Just want to thank everyone on here with their help and advice on fitment etc of the filter as it did help.

I think I would have raised merry hell if they'd done that to me.

If they invalidate your insurance then they will have to refund you the remainder of the years premium, and most insurers won't want to do that, so I would've called their bluff on that one. Also point out that if they're going to be t:censored:ts like that then you'll take your business elsewhere, to a company that is more mod-friendly (like Flux etc.).

Worst case scenario you will need to arrange insurance with someone else a bit quickly (but that could also save you money!), best case scenario they will say "I'll just put you on hold and go and speak to my manager" then come back five minutes later and agree to cover it with the CAI fitted at no extra cost.

And I do agree about taking off the CG-Lock, I only have mine for track use now.

change your insurance company at the next available opportunity!!!!

i had several modified parts with broker adrian flux... cant remember actual company but i was only paying £550 fully comp... for around £3000 worth of modifications!!! Including the ABD CAI!

ok who was the insurer? it's name and shame time!
