Hard to start when warm

Featured Replies

I have a 1.9 tdi classic. its starts dead on when cold but if i turn off after a drive then try to start a few mins later it turns over for 10 seconds or so before starting.

there are no faults recorded and i have changed the water temp sensor!

any ideas?

Does it turn over at the normal speed, or is it maybe a bit slower when turning on the starter?

seems normal but couldnt be 100%

Not the earth, or the starter motor overheating then.

earth form the gearbox was rusty, fixed that still the same, changed battery still the same!

Havnt checked temp of starter. good call

14.5v when charging, when turning over it flashes 9. something (to quick to read) then settles at 10.5v

is this normal enough?

cheers

Very unlikely to be the starter or battery.

Biggest load for the starter is a cold start in the morning. Same for the battery.

Is the mileage high ?

75k not to high

A friend of mine has the exact problem, haven't figured it out yet. I have heard of one case it being the cam sensor. Even though the temp sensor is ok when you disconnect it the car will start instant!

For the record, my PD105 was an instant starter everytime when cold, but on sometimes took a few seconds when warm. I don't know what it was, I seem to remember it doing it almost from new and it didn't get any worse. I sold it with 70k miles on.

it seems to be gettin more common, a dealer near me has 4 or 5 sitting and cant get to the bottom of it

Where is Ross when we really need him? If anyone knows, he will.

if i disconnect the temp sensor it starts right away! reconnect and it just turns over, but if i leave it disconnected when cold it will probably be hard to start

It maybe the starter issue. I would log the starter speed with vagcom when it is hot and see what comes up. I think it has to be close to 270 rpm when 70 degrees +

That seems to suggest that the temperature sensor is at fault. I suggest comparing it minutely with one on a brand new car, although Skoda certainly used to try and help with clear parts numbers, and obvious colour changes when parts specs change.

231 rpm on warm start, ill wait til its cold to see if its the same, i also tried another temp sensor still the same

Well, if the starter's spinning slow, that goes back to it, which suggests motor brushes, a badly worn commutator, or a bad connection in the heavy duty system from battery to motor to earth.

rpm is the same when cold so im back to square 1. Will update if i find anything

cheers

231 is too slow. Reason it starts cold cos the ecu allows for the slower spinning hence why it starts when temp sensor disconnected

I have the same problem with a 2004 1.9 TDI Elegance. I have just learned to live with it.

If someone can give a definitive answer to the problem I will ask my dealer to look at things.

In IMO i think the OP has diagnosed the problem. When the coolant temp is 70 degrees the starter has to spin the engine at least 250rpm. He is only getting 230 rpm. So it's either battery, starter or connections to starter.

right im trying a new starter later today if the connections are good.

i will lets yas know

Has any one found a fix for this problem I have the same fault with a 2005 1.9 TDI Elegance with 16K on the clock. The dealer is very reluctant to replace the starter motor as it is still under warranty. I have had the temp sensor changed and battery tested which has not fixed the fault.

Hi Lee. There's a very limited number of things that a poor warm starting car can be.

As earlier, you could disconnect the temperature sensor, and see if it starts better than. If it does, that's diagnostic of a starter circuit problem. Also, again as earlier, you could get the cranking speed measured, and look for at least 250rpm, preferably 270, which is also diagnostic of the starter circuit.

Also, you could write to the Dealer Principal at your dealership, and explain the problem to him. And finally, you could leave feedback here, in the appropriate forum in the Review Centre. Reviews - Reviews at BRISKODA.net - BRISKODA - The Skoda Forums
