what an eventful 24 hours

hey all, yesterday my beloved fab vrs went to the auctions after i decided to hand it back to finance company, anyway first question, as i dropped the car off nobody inspected it, they just signed to say i had taken it, the place where i had to park it which i assume is an inspection bay, was packed like sardines, if by chance the car gets a dent etc will i get a bill? making me abit paranoid that black horse will drop a bill through my door? it was quite emotional though, didnt think it would bother me that much

so without a car and being told it could be a month before my taxi is ready my cousin offered me to buy his car, (please dont laugh) its a rover 420, on a 99 V, 63k miles full service history, tax and m.o.t till september, £400, on seeing it its in a decent state, much better than i was expecting i decided i didnt have much choice and i trust my cousin not to sell me a duff motor, my insurance company that i asked to change car to said they wouldnt insure me!! which begged the question why can i get insure on a car thats worth is in the thousands goin to and from work, much faster etc yet you wont insure me on a car worth £400 doing upto 3000 miles social only thrid party f+t:eek:

after much messing about i got insured with churchill, £550, only £100 les sthan it cost to insure my fab fully comp!

ive had it a day now, and it feels like a bargain at £400 if im honest, only thing is, there is fluid coming out the exhaust, my brother says its a sign of a healthy engine, is this so? also im looking to put a head unit in as i dont own any casettes and the quality of sound is a bit poor, will a sony head unit go in with no issues?

cheers in advance

Give it a good run and that should get rid of the fluid. It's probably just condensation if it's been stood for a while.

Think Rovers have standard DIN headunit slots so any single DIN headunit should fit. You may need to buy some ISO adapters from Halfords if the connections are different.

Yeah if it's been stood a while and the exhaust design incorporated no drain hole it probably just filled up with condensation. For some reason TPFT is always cheaper than TPO for me, so given the extra cover I go for the former.

I thought this post may have been referring to the space invaders we were all playing :D

haha i must admit i had a little go on it! ive driven it around a bit now and it seems ok, ive been taking it steady though and can smell a kind of burning smell though, also think wheels might need balancing coz it seems abit eager to move with the camber of the road alot, maybe its just me being used to the fabia but im always paranoid about older cars

Mate had a rover 420, best value for money car he had cos you can run them into the ground. I remember he had a burning smell and it was the brakes binding, so (maybe) worth checking that? Nearside binding brake might possibly cause pull to the nearside...

brother had one as a taxi, had well over 200,000 miles on it, was still going strong until a micra hit it and wrote it off

FWIW fully comp with an excess of more than the value of the car is usually cheaper than TPO or TPFT in my experience.

haha funnily enough i tried that, £800 excess was the lowest it would let me have it, and it was £30 more than TPF+T, insurers have always stuck it up me good and proper and i go on every search engine going

4 years NCB no points or disqualifications btw
