Clutch slipping, options?

Featured Replies

Not been on here for a while so don't know if this has been mentioned of late.

I have an 04 plate VRS that I bought two and a half years ago remapped to 175bhp.

About a year later I noticed that the clutch would slip occassionally if I accelerated from low down revs. I have treated the car well and do not go about caning it frequently at all. It has been fine till recently when my wife has started to drive the car. (I am not having a go here!) I was out with her in it and she had problems changing gear, not sure what it was as it was fine with me and I put it down to her not being used to the car. Almost made me cry the jerking the car was doing as she changed gear. Anyhoo, outcome now is the clutch slips alot more frequently under moderate acceleration.

(It is a standard clutch)

I had hoped to mod the car up as got a Stage 2 turbo fitted a year ago and was planning on an uprated clutch, fmoc and a new remap. However, I have moved job and need to get the train into work whcih is costing a fortune and family planning has curtailed my dreams! So it is with great sadness that I am having to sell the car as I only drive it at the weekends and have to buy a banger to get me to the station.

Is there anything I can do to improve the clutch at all without having to replace it? How much would I be looking at to have a standard clutch fitted as £750 or whatever is now out of the budget for an uprated one.

Or do I advertise it as is as an ideal min project to turn into what I had dreamed of doing, a 220bhp diesel scooby chaser?

(FSH 50k, timing belt just done, tax and mot) :D

Any takers?

I have an 05 plate with 35k miles on it and my clutch slipped like mad, it's at 185bhp, until i read a posting on here which mentioned deglazing it with a few rapid starts. It sort of fixes it temporarily as long as you drive sensibly.

I avoid booting it below 2k revs now etc. and it behaves much better. But ultimately it is on it's last legs. I have seen uprated re-manufactured clutch casings and new friction discs releatively cheap on shebay. My local garage will fit the bits for £150. Whilst i save up i am just doing the above.:o

At the risk of sounding stupid MoffBall by rapid starts do you mean just a few 0-60 type of things??

Hey - I had a similar problem! Just had my car remapped (tuning box) and the weekend after I did it my clutch started to slip. So I thought i'd go with an SMF and sachs kit as i'll be doing more power later. £912 delivered from jabbasport and £200 to hire out some ramp time and borrow a mechanic to help me remove the gearbox!

Highly recommended!
