nasty outside rattle on 8 month old car

Featured Replies

Hi,

My 8 month old Octavia (4100 miles on) has developed a nasty outside rattle towards the back - sounds like light metal almost tin like sound when go over uneven roads, up or down hill.

Any one got any clues as to what it could be? Or how to fix! My first thought it' s exhaust lose or hitting something but never had this in such a new and low milage car.

I've booked the car into the local dealer on Friday, do you think they will change for this?

James.

Depends what it is.

If its a faulty part they will not charge under warranty.

If it has been accidental/damage from road etc they may charge.

have you got a false floor-in the rear?? could be a can of something rolling around

Yes that's the first thing I checked! Nothing in there and also the dog guard etc. if you have the window open/radio on (low) you can hardly hear the sound. Up a hill or over a speed bump (slow) it's there.

Found a quite bit of road - slight down hill with a low speed bump in the middle - windows open - engine off - the noise! Sounds like about mid way under the car before the rear box.

Could be a loose heat shield rattling towards the rear of the car near the fuel tank. Can you get under the car and grab/knock/tap random bits of car and see if the knocking reappears?

Its unlikey to be an silencer baffle as they hardly ever fail at such low mileage.

I seem to remember someone posting that the dealer had not removed something from the rear suspension, that is used for transporting and should be removed at its delivery inspection, I just wonder if it could be this item

I had a similar prob on my furby se..turned out it was a 'spare' bolt on the exhaust system rattling around,,dealer had never come across anything like it before !!

They are usually plastic or rubber.

Dont know if they fit them anymore or they ever did on the rear.
