As some of you may know I purchased a high mileage Skoda Felicia yesterday its a 1.3LXi (P Reg) with 101k on the clock.

Anyway im pretty happy with the car, or at least I was until I went for some lunch today and couldn't select reverse trying to get out of the car park, eventually it went in but with a crunch! EEK :thumbdwn:. As i said on a previous post I have also noticed a jolt while accellerating a few times now and Im really worried its a f***ed clutch, the gear stick also moves a little when accelerating only just noticed that as i felt it when resting my hand on it. Not that I can expect much for a car that cost me 200 notes but i'm now a bit P'd off.

Had a look under the bonnet and noticed that the rubber gearbox mount thingy above the gearbox seems to be pretty knackered its on the right of the engine bay as you look at it held down with two bolts, looks like there should be a lot more rubber in there than it has.

Anyway, getting to the point, could this be the problem, excessive movement in gearbox/engine causing elongation/shortening of the clutch cable length while accelerating or decelerating and causing the clutch to drag when reversing????

would appreciate some knowledgable soul giving me some info

AFAIK the top mount is just an anti-vibration thing to stop the car shaking too much. Then again mine's in the same state as yours and I'm on my third gearbox... ;) a new one can be found HERE for 20 quid.

As for the movement of the gearbox causing the clutch cable to lengthen I don't think that would be the case - I do believe it is encased in a black sleeve so it just flexes, but can't have any noticeable change in the distance it must travel.

101k miles is nothing so long as it's had a good few services in it's life.

Re: reverse gear, mine can be difficult to select. I find the best way to get it is in neutral to push the gearstick firmly all the way left, then bring it straight back firmly all the way right, and firmly down into reverse (sometimes in the reverse position it just doesn't catch and when you bring the clutch up there is no movement). I think the problem may be due to worn linkage in my case. Does your gearstick move left to right quite a bit in neutral? (something like YouTube - Loose gear linkage Skoda Favorit ) If it is clutch related I guess adjusting the pedal height could sort it. If the gearstick moves when accelerating (sort of like a rattle rather than movement) then this is because the steady rod rubber mount on the gear linkage is worn. At 101k miles I am guessing your gear linkage could be a little worse for wear.

Re: engine mounts the other engine mount to look at is the doughnut type one on a bar underneath the engine.

Check the pedal height.

Is the clutch pedal stiff?

My Felicias cable grinded on the bodywork then decided to unravel itself about 4000 miles after the clutch change. But had a new cable and the car was a joy to drive again. This same cable is currently sat in my Favorit.

A Clutch change on my Felicia was £150 parts and fitting. Depends on garage though!

I think someone on here had the gear linkages done might have been anewman or Philje I think.

It's not that it doesn't engage, it just grinds as it goes in sounds bl**dy awful and Im worried about knackering the gearbox!

Just really worried this is going to cost me as much as the car to sort out, cheers for the info

Try putting it into first, then straight across and down into Reverse - this is what I do and it never grinds.

It does sound bad when you go straight into reverse

Unless you are good at car repairs, Rich, and prepared to trawl scrapyards expect some large outgoings. I've not found anything cheap about getting a Skoda fixed.

My Skoda is pretty cheap to fix and reliable too. But like any car if something goes wrong you have to be in the know to get your value for money on parts and prices.

Get the engine from yours into this one and bobs your uncle!! Just have to ask how the car drove before the head gasket popped. Then just scavenge and strip the other Felly.

Well, drove home and reversing seems to be ok again! hmmmm might put it in for a free clutch check at the local clutch place.

Still having the little jumps every now and again when driving.

I've not found anything cheap about getting a Skoda fixed.

Unfortunately mechanics charge for labour which is the expensive part. Something silly like £50 an hour in some places.

A lot of the time it depends where you take it, like anewman says labour is the biggest cost.

I'm lucky that my mechanic is good and charges me a fair price.
