BSOD after XP SP3 update

Featured Replies

Help! :) I updated a friend's Dell computer to XP SP3 via microsoft update for him last night, and now it boots to a BSOD. I have traced the cause to the usb ports, if I remove the mouse and keyboard, ie nothing usb plugged in at all, the computer boots fine. Once I try and plug any usb devices in, mouse keyboard etc, BSOD occurs immediately.

It worked fine before, and it will not boot in safe mode.

Other than a reformat - any suggestions welcome.

TIA

Does it have a PS2 port Dave?

You could try a standard keyboard if it does.

Cor that's a good 'un. Will it boot into safe mode?

Oh yeah ;) Well you're a bit stuck without a keyboard. Had a couple of ideas but defeated them both as I was typing.

Good luck!

also maybe (though for ASUS motherboard)

Boot loop & ACPI BSOD's with SP3 with ASUS mobo

In most cases it looks like being a case of uninstalling the USB drivers and letting XP reinstall them itself after it boots up.

Quite a lot of peeps have had this trouble if you Google "dell xp sp3 usb bsod" and even the same but without the "dell".

...and you'll have to try to get hold of PS2 type keyboard and/or mouse  to enable you to do this.

Ok thanks all so far. I do not have any access to a ps2 mouse or keyboard sadly, and it won't boot in safe mode. The job is ****ed at the moment. I may just reinstall windows on the machine and disable automatic updates.

All because of a driver conflict?

A little OTT!

Remote desktop isn't a bad call. If it isn't currently activated you could hack the registry by booting with BartPE or similar.

But then when you think about the hassle it might not be worthwhile.

He only uses it to go on youpron and has no files on it. In fact it's so full of trailware and crap that i would probably be doing him a favour.

You could use the recovery console and uninstall service pack 3?

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer (method 4)

Thanks I'll give that a go.

You'll need a full copy of XP to do this. The recovery CD will wipe the system.

Thanks - I used that method with no problems whatsoever last week when someone royally messed up their whole machine by interrupting a service pack installation mid-way through by turning the power off at the wall :D

Not sure how his installation of XP worked though!
