Where to ground a subwoofer?

Featured Replies

The ground wire that came with my wiring kit seems relatively short, only a metre if that. Right now I'm grounding it to the rear left light, but as I have an estate this means I can't push the woofer all the way back (so it's touching the seats) due to the length of the wire and as a result boot space is being comprimised (it's a twin 12").

Does anybody know of any spots near the seats where I could ground to? I found a place behind a rubber screw but I couldn't see how I could attach the wire to it confidently.

Seatbelt mounting bolt?

That looked really fiddly/akward and I didn't want to risk not bolting a safety feature back on properly.. but if worse comes to worse I'll give that a shot I guess

I used one of the mounts for the seatbelt at the shoulder end. Can't not put it back right as it's just a big bolt to undo (19mm IIRC) and secure it over the bolt with an eyelet preferably, then re-do up said bolt tight again. :)

ya could always pop along to maplins or other places that sell wire off the reel, jus buy a few metres and then u can wire it to rear light area and put sub against seats :) i shall be doing this in a few weeks in my boot, rewire job. boom! hope this helps.

Shouldn't an earth cable be as short as possible?.

Shouldn't an earth cable be as short as possible?.

Ideally, but I suppose as long as the rating far exceeds the job it's needed for, a 2 metre earth cable wouldn't be too bad. For my battery relocation job my earth wire is about 8" :D

PS: And in usual Brisky fashion of course we all know 8 inches is from | <----- here, to here ----> |

Wouldn't sharing an earth with the lights make them dim slightly when the subs making loud noises? :)

I ended up drilling a new hole underneath the carpet and securing it in with a screw/washer. Works fine. And yeah, I did watch out for the petrol tank.. heh.

I'm having the same problem!

Dead easy. Well it was for me as I found it first :)

looking into the engine bay. Top left theirs a grommet. Through there into the compartment under the plastic trim under the wipers. From their another grommet into behind the glovebox.

As for the earth. I always use the seatbelt tjingy. Just remove some paint. Sorted.

As above, feeding a power cable in is **** easy.

Open bonnet, look at top right (your right) and theres a grommit. Remove the seal and pull the scuttle up a bit (might need a torch) you'll see another grommit at the back.

Remove both of the grommit and make a hole through them, then poke the end of the cable thats going to the boot through them both, and pull them right to the other end.

Then get a wire coat hanger and pull it apart, tape the power cable to it tightly.

Now go inside and remove the glovebox (5 t20 screws IIRC) remove it carefully as the light is a bugger to reift and theres also an air con tube

now poke the hanger down into the hole under the scuttle. might take a few goes but eventually it should come into the car into the padding at the left of the glovebox.

Voila its in the car, now just remove the plastic trim panels and clip it into the cable boxes running along the side, youll need hanger again to get through the b pillar trim.

Remmber to run your phono cables on the other side.

I managed to get 2 of them down the one side, but it was a bloody squeeze

I earthed mine on the left hand side of the boot, behind the carpet trim, there is a natural earth point put there by skoda and it works a treat, held on with a 10mm nut I think

its better for the earth to be as short as poss yea but its also need to be the right awg. If its thinner than the power cable its wrong, its needs to be just as thick as the power cable.

It needs to have a good connection to BARE metal, painted isnt good enough.

If the earth is poor aswell as the amp just not working it might try to earth through your RCA's causing the RCA earth tracks to blow in the head unit causing the dreaded alternator wine
