Turbo has started to whine

Featured Replies

So I'm 2 months out of warranty  on my Octy II vRS TDI and the noise started yesterday morning, and it's louder today - Only really hear it in first few gears at low speed - It's not your normal turbo whistle sound, the only way I can describe it is the same note and pitch of a police siren but obviously not as loud.

Took it down to the dealer and they can't get me booked in until next Friday, but as I'm commuting 800 miles between now and then I'm a little worried.

Anyone else had similar? I'm a little concerned that my turbo is on it's way out....:orb_upset

Quick.

Go get a "Tesco Finest" warranty for around £349.

Then claim for a new turbo off that :)

Good idea and then to be on the safe side, delete your post :D

My car has always had a siren sound? Is this really the turbo going down hill cause it has done it for at least the years I have owned it, but ive never had any problems with the car? Its a octy 2 litre PD140

Mine developed this police siren noise at about 50k and the turbo blew apart at about 70k

It would whine under light partial load and it would scream its nuts off on full boost.

It would also slowly build up if idle for about 5 minutes. A dab of the throttle would sort it out.

I had a few instances where the VNT vanes jammed open triggering an over boost, it did this three or four times before it went bang.

Some people have had this whining for ages with no problems.

My new turbo has had a quiet whine since it was put in under warranty.

I would be concerned about sudden changes in pitch and volume.

Mine's been loud for the last two years. Fingers crossed.

Mine's on about 68k miles, and the noise has only just started, which is why I'm concerned. It's more noticeable through the lower gears - I can't hear it when I get up to normal cruising speed, but maybe that's because it's drowned out by the engine / road noise.

Ah well, it goes in to dealership next Friday - fingers crossed if it needs any work that Skoda will do the work under 'good will' seeing as it's only just out of the warranty.

Might let it sit idle for a while and see if the noise builds up - I can't actually hear it at idle, it's only when driving.

It used to take around 4-5 minutes at idle (when properly warmed up) for the whine to slowly build up. I couldn't hear it above 40mph because of the road noise.

It would be better if the problem can be diagnosed in a proactive fashion and not when it goes bang and takes out the condenser and half of the intake piping

I took mine in when it was whining and I was told to politely go away. Next thing its being towed in by a VW assist van.

Its difficult as they can't just replace every turbo that "doesn't sound right" as some whine and are perfectly normal.

Hopefully they will nail it Next week, fingers crossed for you.

I hope so! The bloke I spoke to said he'd have a good poke around and make sure it gets diagnosed properly, will just have to wait and see I guess.....

So has mine, bought at 16K miles, now on 74K miles and sounds exactly the same. Same engine as well, 2.0 PD140.

Hmm... My Octavia Elegance 2.0 TDi 140 has the same noise I've only had it 3 months and it's a Sept 2005 with 56,00 miles on the clock. Privately bought but from what I consider to be a fair seller. Not sure what to do now. Never had a diesel before so did'nt know what it was. Sounds like it's pot luck if it blows or not.

Yeah, pretty much. You might want to consider that Tesco finest warranty mentioned near the top of the thread.

Well in the end I had to have the turbo replaced - it seems the axle(?) inside was wobbling around and causing the whistle - So as I'm only just out of warranty (8 weeks) managed to get 70% goodwill on parts from Skoda but had to pay labour so all in all came to about £800 :Yikes: . And yes, the new turbo sounds completely different and is whistling away but have had it checked out by 2 dealerships and both say it is fine and normal. At least it now has 2 years warranty on it.

Now my air conditioning compressor seems to have stopped working - Skoda want £691 just for the compressor, not to mention the labour!!!!! So following a panicked call to Customer Services I am awaiting notification of some goodwill on that too.....:weeping::weeping::weeping:

When this car was in warranty nothing went wrong - it waited until just out of the warranty until it threw this little lot at me in one go......Hopefully that will be it for a while - now do I buy an extended warranty or have I now replaced everything that is gonna go wrong already?

As already said get an aftermarket warranty and don't do anything until it has kicked in?

Just bought a VERY comprehensive warranty from www.warrantydirect.co.uk for £240 (had to haggle a bit) for my 83,000 mile 06 Octavia TDI. Includes turbo and everything else!

I dont anticipate any problems but it's nice reassurance.

I've got a 'police siren' whine on my 2 ltr diesel Octy 2 - Been told it's the Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF).

Gonna get it done at a cost of about £1K.

The whine is engine speed related and sometimes loud enough to make you look to see if there are any emergency service vehicles around

It will go on whining, quite happily, for a long time and, apparently, it gives lots of warning when it's going to go completely, LOUD whine, excessive vibration. etc.

Best get it done sooner rather that later I was told.

Had it done, the garage did say that the DM Flywheel was sh--ged, but it didnt cure the whine.

Its now been put down to ait whistling into the inlet to the turbo.

Hasn't had any adverse effects yet and it sbeen another 40K miles since.

Will keep Y'all posted.

Holy Thread revival :)

My pd140 whines as well but only under full throttle acceleration in first gear. I also get a surprisingly loud sneezing sound when changing gear which is strange as I don't have a dump valve fitted. Seems these cars all have their own little noises!

I once had a PD turbo car that sounded like it had an owl held hostage under the bonnet

Turbo's faults are caused by drivers not letting the car idle a few minutes before turning off, it is stated in the hand book that this should be done. The spindles slack is taken up by oil pressure, when the engine is turned off the oil pressure drops but the turbo still spins. It has cost VW thousands in rejected claims to Garrett. I don,t think it will be long before a full inspection of the turbo will need to be carried by the dealer before its changed under the warranty. If there are the signs of damaged vanes or scrapped housings the costs will be charged to the customer.
