The oil symbol appeared on my dash yesterday. I've got the oil I need, but how much do i put in? I don't know if it makes any difference but the engine is a 2.0TDi with manual transmission.

Just warm the car up to normal operating temp, let it sit for 5 minutes then check your oil. Put half a litre in at a time, wait 30 seconds for it to reach the sump, then check the oil again. Repeat untill its about half way up the dipstick NOT to the top. You have to allow for a certain amount of expansion as the oil heats up. If you overfill with oil you could ruin your CAT.

Check the level now, add a little then wait 5 mins, then check again.

TBH, you shouldnt see the low oil level warning if you are checking the level at the intervals mentioned in the handbook. If the light does come on, dont continue driving until its been topped up otherwise you may starve the engine of oil if you take a corner quickly.

Thank you both for your help. I'm not very good at checking the car at regular intervals - i just do what I'm told when the car tells me something. I won't have any problems with the CAT as we are dog people!!!

Nice one, just make sure you dont fill up with dogs then.

There's a litre between MIN and MAX on the dipstick, so that should tell you how much you need to put in.
