Door mirror replacement

Featured Replies

Driver's side door mirror on my daughter's 2000 Fabia Classic got smacked and is unrepairable.

Got a replacement off ebay - are they easy to fit? Any hidden screws or clips that I should be aware of? Will be driving 20 miles to fit it - will I need any special tools such as odd sized sockets or Allen keys?

Can anybody help? Don't want to drive out there and find I need something that I left at home!

Got the mirror. The manual adjustor thingummy is on extended cables - does the door card have to come off?

Tried to get the info from my daughter but she is less than forthcoming!

I replaced one on my vRS a couple of years ago. I seem to remember the door card having to come off, but that was probably 'cos of the electric controls? If you have to take the card off, you'll need a 'special' tool which is easily fashioned by obtaining a (cheap) long, thin, plain screwdriver and bending the blade so as to resemble a banana! :D This is needed to release some clips holding the arm rest on, IIRC.

The Haynes manual is not great, but it enabled me to work things out OK.

Fitted the replacement mirror at the weekend and for future reference should anyone else need to do it here are the bits that took the time and the bits I broke!

For the record this is a 2000 Classic with manual adjust mirror and manual windows

  1. The door card does need to come off and though it looks as though it's in several pieces it is in fact all 1 piece.
  2. There are 3 torx (sp?) screws along the bottom edge and 3 large Philips screws hidden behind the arm rest.
  3. I broke a clip removing the front section of the arm rest but it seems to have gone back OK. With the front bit removed, the back bit of the arm rest slides a couple of mm towards the front of the car then lifts out.
  4. The mirror adjust kn0b won't come all the way off until the plastic trim is removed but it helps to pull it free before removing the trim - just give it a firm tug.
  5. I broke a clip on the mirror kn0b surround and it won't fit back properly - to avoid this I think it should be eased towards the back of the car to free the front claws first.
  6. I spent ages trying to get the window winder handle off! Here's how to do it! There is a black plastic clip. With the window winder pointing upwards get a thin screwdriver into the slot and push down on the clip - simple once you work it out!
  7. I spent more time trying to work out how to get the door handle off - it doesn't! It is held against the door by a single torx screw and comes away with the door card. It's connected to the door mechanism by long cables so plenty of room to pull the door card out of the way.
  8. There are about 6 push clips on the card - 3 down each side; pull them out starting at the bottom then lift the card to unhook it from the top of the door and get it over the locking button - easiest with the window wound right down.
  9. The bolt that holds the mirror is a pretty hefty Allen bolt
  10. The rest is all pretty obvious except - when it comes to putting it all back together, if you hunt around cursing for 15 minutes trying to find the torx bit for your screwdriver - it's in your pocket :o:O:O
