Wheel nuts

Featured Replies

Last year while towing our caravan my wife got a puncture, she had to call out the rac to help as she could not remove the security bolt even the rac man struggled with a long bar.

he told her to remove them all and just use normal bolts so she obtained some new ones then found she could not get the other 3 security ones off they had to be cut out by a local garage

so if you have them on yours remember they could be a nightmare to slacken off especially if you have OME alloys

Moral: Make sure you can shift all the wheel bolts on a car using the supplied spanner - especially after it has been to a VAG dealer. Preferably, carry a length of steel tube to add leverage.

After a puncture on a wet night with my Superb, I was extremely glad I did. (Full marks to VAG for supplying a proper spare wheel - even if the jack is barely up to the job).

rotodiesel.

I purchased a proper extendible wheel brace, which lives with the jack in my car. Don't think I have ever tried to take the wheel off with the 'wrench' supplied, as it never looks adequate!

Yes that is a good idea, I got one of them for my wife's Polo - I think that I've just put a breaker bar+short extension+socket into my boot as I rather the right-angled "bit" of that set up rather than the gentle angle on the extendible one which looks like it could try to break free after rounding off the bolt heads - just a thought! Still this stuff is better than the old LandRover kit from 1970's - the wheel brace handle just wrapped round the rest of the brace and the screw jacks would randomly attempt to send the second stage down into the ground - not good!
