DSG v Manual

Featured Replies

If you were able to choose between DSG or Manual which would you choose and why?

DSG...............because it offers the best of both worlds, lazy effortless cruising in automatic and almost instant manual changes should you need to push on a bit. I do very high mileage and to be honest the gearbox spends most of its time in "D".

Manual every time. I have owned over 25 cars in my driving life and 3 have been automatic. I have had problems with all three autos, (Honda, Vauxhall and Peugeot) and never had to replace even a clutch on a manual, even on the VERY ropey Datsun 120Y which had done over 350,000 miles BEFORE I got it!

depends what you want the car for,

If the car is a full on plaything for the weekend then deffinatly manual

If you'd even think of using the car for commuting or as anything more than a toy then undoubtedly DSG

A manual with short shift mod. :D

Serioulsy, a long test drive in both is the answer. I've read about some road situations which can catch the DSG out (pulling quickly out of side juctions is one) but don't know how common these are. Jason Plato loves it...

answer this first - What are you going to use the car for? commuting in London, long distance journeys? fun? lots of stop start traffic?

I have had lots of cars and driven many more. Best automatics were on BMW's e39 5 series. Then I found the DSG from Audi as fitted to the Octavia (not the VW version). It is simply the best auto out there. Because it isn't an auto. it's a manual without a clutch.

DSG without launch control is as quick as a manual to 60. If we could enable launch control then the DSG would wipe the floor. The DSG is also very economical compared to a mormal auto, but not as good as a manual.

I love mine. for the driving I do, around London, long distance journeys, short tips, long trips, it is perfect.

There are known issues, just search on this forum, they have been discussed at length.
