Me thinks the original owner of my 05 vrs mk1 was a bit tight and went with the aircon with circular dials instead of said climatronic.

I've seen a few of these on ebay, is it a straight swap between the climatron and the three circular dials mount? If not anyone fitted this after purchase?

The climatronic differs from the air conditioning in that it actively controls the interior climate and for that it uses signals from things like the sunlight sensor (bobble in the top of the dash) and the temp sensor under the plenum covers. So unless you have the wiring loom in place for those I don't think the climatronic will work properly, certainly not in "auto" mode.

Euro models came with aircon rather than climatronic as standard. Climatronic had to be specified as an extra.

What can be easier than setting climatronic to 20 deg and leaving on auto.

On my 02 Mk1 RS, I had aircon, and it took for ever to clear the windows on a cold morning. On my current 04 RS, the climatronic clears them much quicker.

I don't have Eurozone prices, but someone priced up doing an aircon to Climatronic conversion in the UK, and it runs in at £4_000. It's far from just the front panel that needs changing.
