Apache web server config help.

Featured Replies

We use websense to filter our web traffic at the office, now having rebooted the server to fix a performance issue the other day, I have discovered that the websense manager is no longer working. It was working the day before the reboot.

When accessing the interface, I get the error.

HTTP Status 404 - /mng/

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

type Status report

message /mng/

description The requested resource (/mng/) is not available.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apache Tomcat/6.0.13

the mng folder is correctly located in the c:\Program Files\Websense\tomcat\work\Catalina\localhost

any ideas?

Sounds like Apache is running, but whatever interfaces to Websense isn't there. Are all expected services running? I'm afraid I don't know anything about the application.

Check the config files for an alias entry for that directory- remember that it may not be in the main config nfile but may be in a small one specified by an 'include'.

the mng folder is correctly located in the c:\Program Files\Websense\tomcat\work\Catalina\localhost

The below makes some assumptions about your server configuration, so may not be correct... :)

In Tomcat, the work directory isn't what controls the deployment of an application - on a running server, you can often delete what's in the work directory and your webapps will keep going.

Under the Tomcat directory, there should be a conf directory - within here will be a server.xml file. Look in this XML file for "appBase" which should show you the location of where it will look for web applications. You can then check this folder to make sure that there's an mng WAR and/or directory within there.

Unfortunately Tomcat is very flexible when it comes to configuration, so there are other ways it could be configured to work within WebSense, and I don't have any experience with that particular product. Your problem does look like the mng app isn't deployed within Tomcat though, if that's a good starting point? :)

I have attached the server.xml file to this post in a zip file, maybe somone who understands apache can take a look.

I have looked in the webapps folder and there is only a folder named ROOT. However there is a war file in a folder named manager.

server.zip

Is that WAR file called mng.war? If so, what happens if you copy it into the webapps directory?

It's not uncommon to keep WAR files elsewhere other than the webapp directory (if you undeploy the application it removes the WAR file), so I would hazard a guess that maybe on startup it copies the WAR file from the manager directory to the webapp directory, and then it should auto-deploy the app.

What version of Websense is it? Is it standalone, or gateway? Are you trying to access the console from the local server or across the network?

Websense V7.01 web filter, I cant access the manager from anywhere even the local server.

The war file is called manager.war

Websense itself as a product is still working, and carrying out its updates without problems. As long as I dont need to change the config that is, as I cannot do that at the moment.

Have you tried stopping and restarting all the websense services?

From the Websense knowledgebase:

If you are stopping multiple services, end with the following services, in the order shown:

1. Websense Policy Server

2. Websense Policy Broker

3. Websense Policy Database

If you are starting multiple services, begin with the following, in the order shown:

1. Websense Policy Database

2. Websense Policy Broker

3. Websense Policy Server

In other words, always stop Policy Database last, and start it first.

I had a similar problem to this but can't for the life of me remember what I did to resolve it...I'll keep thinking.

The war file is called manager.war

Does that contain a file called status.xsd with some Apache licensing stuff in it? If so, it is probably the Tomcat manager rather than the WebSense manager.

If it doesn't have this file in it, you could try copying it to the webapp directory, and it might deploy to mng (depends what's in it).

Manny,

If it were a normal apache install, serving normal things I'd love to help... But as it's websense and tomsplat... windows, I doubt it but has the update / improvements changed any permissions anywhere on any of the files/folders?

I'd go for removing the manager war and re-deploying, take some backups first of course. It's been too many (too few) years since working with tomcat. My approach with that and websphere was to be well covered on backups and deploy often, one change at a time. It's a royal pita when it's not working out for you, especially on a nice Friday.

I did some playing before coming home.

I copied the manager.war file from the manager folder to the webapps folder and renamed it mng.war. The management website now starts, but something is up with the config as next to policy server on the login page it shows the wrong IP address, and attempting to login you get an error because I have no server on that IP.

I am going to try installing the manager only on another 2003 box and see what happens. I have already tried removing the manager, but it doesnt let you unless you uninstall some key websense components and settings at the same time.

Didnt work, attempting to install just the manager gives an error at the end of the install.

still trying to fix the other one now, which has stopped working again.

Latest update,

I upgraded it from 7.01 to 7.1 which has gone smoothly, but. after the upgrade the server needed a reboot. Not usually a problem, but I have a feeling I left a floppy disk in the drive so now its stuck part way through a reboot saying the floppy is not bootable, oops. No internet for anyone at work over the weekend then.

oh, it seems to have rebooted eventually. The manager even seems to be working, now all I need to fix is why the updated version is not recording any stats.

edit: its all working now, stupid MS SQLAgent service was not running. Started this and all is well again.
