Quick Question

Featured Replies

I just have a quick question;

I have a 2001 1.4 16v Fabia with a screwed steering rack. I have found one at a breakers yard off of a 2007 HTP Fabia. Both cars have power steering on them. On my rack it says TRW.

Now as far as I know there are two different types of rack, but is it just one with and one without PAS?

In short, is it certainly going to fit from a 2007 car to a 2001 car?

Thanks in advance,

Joe.

I should not really post this as its only half an answer, but, one thing you must do is stick to the same manufacturer of rack as you have already, I even say that the newer rack will probably be a TRW as I think it was only the earlier cars that had the Koyo systems. If you are UK based then I'd think that all the cars coming here had power steering.

As to wither a 2007 rack can be used as a "drop in" without any other problems or changes to a 2001 car - I just don't know - sorry.

Maybe check the fluid reservoir on the donor car if possible - as it should look exactly as your one - ie the caps should be identical.

Ok, thanks.

Apparantly the cap doesn't say anything about TRW, but all the part numbers tie up - is it a fair assumption that it should fit?

Have you looked closely at the reservoir cap - there should be a few letters and numbers on it - some of them should be TRW - does it have vertical "gripping ribs" to help you unscrew it - and a mushroom sort of fluid level bit on it?

No, this is what they have told us over the phone (it's still on the car). It is a proper operation not just a scrap heap. I guess cos the part numbers tie up between that cap and mine it should be ok. If not it transpires it can be returned anyway, so if it doesn't fit nothing lost.

Thanks for your help though!:thumbup:

Without re-reading this thread, I think that you originally said that you knew your system was TRW and I replied saying that most if not all later systems were TRW - seems that you have now confirmed this. These two suppliers of power steering systems to VAG were not as far as I know, made of compatable parts between Koyo and TRW - that is what I know. I'd guess that maybe only the steering angle connector might have changed - but maybe as you already have TRW system in your car that will not be a problem. I would have thought that the rack will have been revised - most things do end up being improved, but after all its only looking for a suitable supply of pressurised fluid and its only passing back information on the steering angle being demanded - or maybe I'm simplifying things a bit too far - you'll find out soon enough - good luck!

I see what your saying, and appriceate the help! However I don't know either way but will try anyway, as all I have to lose is time.

I will post the result at some point as it may be of some use to someone else.
