Noise from front right wheel

Featured Replies

Had my window open today and heard a schhh scchhh scraping noise from the front right wheel. It got through the MOT. Don't know what it is.

If its "metallicy" it could be the brakes kissing or dragging lightly - check temperature of the front wheels on each side (not the discs!) after a run - they should both be the same roughly. Modern suspension systems give you the road holding we all desire cheaply by using a bit of camber so the tyre will scrub a bit and make that noise if its not metallic. Third reason, if it squeels now and again could be a trapped stone in the braking area. One thing, does it go away if you apply the brakes lightly - if so then its lightly dragging brakes. No point in considering wheel bearings or warped discs yet!

Maybe you should keep your window shut (joke) especially when driving between two highish walls as you will hear lots of things (that is the problem with Summer - hear lots more noises!)

Oh no, I missed out the drive shaft joints (just to worry you more)!

its leprechauns obviously

Thanks for your useful pose missp!

Rum I think the brake scenario sounds the most likely as it goes after the brakes have had a bit of hard use. Don't think it is driveshafts at the kind of miles my car has done and in any case i would have thoght that would have been spotted at the dealers. Might be the tires, but not too worried as no detrimental effect. Someoned else suggested the stone but the sound is more like a quieter version of a twig stuck in the mudguard of your bike and rubbing against the tire. Yes I've checked and not there's nothing there.

A lot of the time if it is just a stone, then you would not need to open your window, in fact you would not probably want to move the car - the noise can be very serious sounding - although no or very little damage is being done. When this happened to my wife's Polo 9N, she claimed that it would not move - so didn't drive it - I think that she meant that it would not move without making a noise - AA man beat me to sorting it, but that is what we pay money for I suppose!

You just seem to have slight "kissing" or "dragging" - it will soon be wet and cold again, so you will not hear it!!

Mate of mine had this recently in reasonably new C3 he got from a big dealer, and occured when turning the wheel slightly. Had to take it back about 3 times before they finally sorted out the problem (nothing serious at all, minor adjustment on brake pad I think) but he was about to ask for refund on the basis that they didn't sort it first 2 times he returned it (they claimed to have driven it out for a check but had they done so would have spotted the noise immediately). If it is what he had then yes it would have passed the MOT as it was not a sfatey/performance problem, just annoying...
