external bike racks - no towbar

Featured Replies

Hello,

I'm waiting for my Roomster. Should have had it yesterday - but the truck transport company stuffed up - probably not until Wednesday next week now.

Anyway - I'm looking at external bike carriers to go on the back.

Does anyone here use one - without a towbar (so mounted to the tailgate). I've seen some Hollywood, Saris and Thule ones on the web. Does anyone have any tips on which one to get or not to get?

Well done for choosing a Roomie!

I've used roof and tailgate mounted bike racks on other cars and never really liked the latter - even using extra straps and being careful over set-up it just never inspired confidence but maybe I'd been spoiled by my roof racks. Mine was a high-mount version (keeps number plate and lights clear so no need for light board) which probably didn't help. I think strap-on racks may be illegal in some countries - Portugal perhaps?

Skoda do an internal 2 bike rack which is good but pricey - there's some relative posts on earlier threads somewhere. Otherwise I would personally prefer a roof rack (fork-mount version). Pity about the absent towbar - racks which fit these seem pretty good although I've never used one.

Hi

I've used tailgate and roof mount racks on my Roomie and towball mounts on my previous Fabia. I've just ordered a towbar - being fitted next week - together with a decent bike rack. Nuff said?

I guess I was looking at the option of a rear mount because of the height of the roomster. Is a roofrack difficult to mount? If I can save the expense of fitting a towbar this would help - as I cant see myself towing anytime soon

Is a bike rak available that fits on the towbar and can still be used when towing? I've got one on the old car that I'm changing for a Roomster tomorrow, but that car has the two bolt flange so can't be used on the Roomster.

Here's the official Skoda stuff, if you are interested.
