Clutch questions

Featured Replies

Hi All,

After replacing my clutch pedal it would now seem I need a new clutch the car is

Oct VRS 2002, 100,000miles

I am being told that I can have this done in 2 ways either by just replacing the clutch if they can seperate it from the flywheel or replace the lot, has anybody had experience with this when I used to do clutches the came away from the flywheel no problem, can someone explain what this new setup is?

Many thanks

Alex

100k? You did well there mate. Mine made it to 90 and failed as I drove onto the forecourt for a service! I recon it was a conspiracy! :D

Anywho, I've always been told to replace both.

DMF will be on it's last legs as well after 100K So clutch/DMF and release bearing.

yeah i think they wear together. If you can stand a little extra cabin vibration the single mass flywheel is a cheaper and lighter option. So you will get a slight increase in performance.

Hmmm more perfoemance I like it, does anybody know the part number & if this mod is reliable?

Price for OEM clutch and DMF has dropped to about £370. Be advised if you fit a Single Mass Flywheel, the gearbox noise at idle is terrible. DMF also reduces wear on the gearbox, as it dampens out torque spikes. SMF only really needed if car mapped to crazy power.

Single mass is the way to go and the way i will be going when mine is fooked. Torque maybe a factor on the Fabia with a big torque spike for about a second but the Octy is more of a sustained torque curve. Yes there will be some more rattle/vibration in the cabin on idle but if the OP doesn't mind then thats fine.

Why should a single mass only be used "on a car mapped to crazy power"??

Hi,

Just a thank you to you all for the advice, I think I am going to stay standard not planning any huge power if I get the ole girl re-mapped it won't be any more than the 225 upgrade, had my days of insane power in things that way less then a biscuit tin... mind you never say never...;)

Alex the corrado G60 flywheel is very popular for the 1.8T see here

Also ecs through Awesome gti sell the single mass with two different weights.

I'm not planning huge power and my car is bone stock, but when my clutch gave out I went for VR6 / G60 replacement items.

Not noticed any massive increase in either vibration or noise and I shouldn't have to replace them again now. What I have noticed is sharper response. Dual mass is an asshole and costs a fortune. But it's up to you....

Last week we fitted a Valeo kit to a mates MK4 Golf GTi 1.8t. Came with a single mass flywheel and clutch kit. Everything you needed basically. Only cost £217.00 all it from Euro Car Parts. Fitted in an evening so a nice simple job.

Car seems to have a smoother power delivery now and does not have the rattle like mine does with my Billet flywheel and spec stage 3 clutch.

A good product it would seem :)

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards

Garry

He said 'only really needed'- presumably on a very tuned car the torque will mangle it. There's no reason why you couldn't use an SMF on a standard car, at the cost of some noise (and maybe gearbox wear?)- a colleague has done that on a Peugeot.

alot cheaper to buy straight from them though sarah $329 + free shipping

about £200 @ current market

We get alot of parts from ECS and it costs us a fortune for shipping , then there is the duty to pay when it arrives with customs

Sarah

but how can they expect you to try and sell a product thats over £100 more to buy from you.. when we can buy straight from them for £200 notes job done??

i understand some people are willing to pay a bit more but not that much:confused:

There's a lot of nonsense talked about the benefit of DMF - the only tangible one is potentially reduction in gearbox noise due to torsional vibrations at idle.

I've replaced mine at 100K or so when the clutch started slipping, single mass flywheel and spring damped friction plate, and there's absolutely no extra noise at all. Clutch operation is as you'd expect and the price is considerably less. I took a chance on an ebay kit which cost me £160 for clutch, flywheel and release bearing, I fit myself so no fitting costs and not really a big deal if it didn't work out. As it turns out everything works fine, stage1 remap and I'm not gentle with the car all the time, it's done 12K miles trouble free so far.
