I've broken it....... 1.8T 4x4 Transmission Vibration When On Over Run With 4wd

Featured Replies

Anyone know anything about my problem.....

Yesterday, at speed on the M11 I hit some deep standing water, about an inch, I felt a wobble then it all went safe when the 4wd system picked up the aquaplane, but whilst running in 4wd there was a noticeable vibration when decellerating...

It did it again later yesterday in similar circumstances (torrential rain) and again when I took a huge roundabout a little too fast and again used the 4wd system....

I'm guessing UJ / Bush or the like.....

Anyone got any pointers?

Its a 52 plate, 50k hatch with full main dealer service history.....

Thanks for any pointers:)

Mine used to make a horrendous noise occasionally in standing water that would resinate loudly through the whole car & with a buzzing vibration. I never attributed it to the transmission, I always thought it exhaust / heat shield related when suddenly cooled, it did it off & on for a few years until I sold it & is probably still doing it. I will add I was running non std exhaust, low suspension etc etc. If you were decelerating the 4wd system is unlikely to be engaged although the esp might be doing something.

Thanks for that, I can play with that, ESP light was not on to play;) but the exhaust thing sounds plausible...

I'll get it all looked at underneath and see!

I've just been out in it, with a trailer on the back laiden with a smart car and it was fine.... but no water on the roads.

I was told it was a known VAG 4x4 problem caused by cold water/snow hitting the hot exhaust which moves and hits the floor making a horendous noise. Mines been fixed twice but still does it occasionally but once you know what it is its not such a worry - just annoying. Get an exhaust place to move it a bit.

As someone else said, if you were decelerating the Haldex would have been disengaged (or you could end up with some interesting rotational force you weren't expecting...).

Haldex kicks in only during acceleration.
