Roof aerial alternative?

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a MKI Octavia vRS, I want to loose the roof aerial, I have seen the S2000 aerial and I think it looks good but I would rather have no aerial on the roof at all.

Is there some kind of aftermarket aerial that is attached to the back window and is flat like the in-car TV aerials you can get.

On that, would an in-car VHF aerial give me decent FM radio reception.

I just want to loose the roof aerial and smooth the roof without loosing radio reception.

When I was in the MG club there were some members that used an aerial which was basically shaped like the outline of the windscreen and stuck to the inside of the windscreen. It wasn't really noticeable as it blended in with the seal around the edge of the windscreen. Don't know where to buy them from though or if there's an Octy version.

That internal aerial is good, if it does the job it is interesting, looks a bit bulky but it is only a fiver so perhaps there is a more "premium" version out there I can find.

Thanks for the link though.

The other thing sounds good too, I will try trawling for that too.

could you get something like that and chuck it up above the headlining?

I don't know if it would work through the metal...

Worth a try though.

I just want to loose the roof aerial and smooth the roof without loosing radio reception.

I wanted to do the same but the work involved is huge!

You could fill the two holes it would leave, but as the roof is metal and the filler isn't they'll contract and expand at different rates as the roof heats up in the sun leading the filler to sink.

You could weld up the holes instead, but the distortion to the roof caused by the welding would be huge and take a lot of work to straighten out.

Be warned that it's really not an easy (or cheap) job! :(

Thanks.

I have the guy lined up to do it already but it will be after the brakes/head unit/filter+chip gets done.

He's done crash repairs on pretty much everything in the world and shaved a lot of cars too.

The thing with cost is, if it costs less than about £600 I don't have to save up so I don't mind doing it.

Now that the spoiler and wiper are off the back it draws even more attention to the aerial. I want it gone.

Stick some photos up if you do do it as I'd like to see it done

Will do, won't be until the end of the year though.

I've got so much to do first.

I bought a cheap genuine Citroen/Pug small roof aerial for mine. It is smaler than the S2000 jobby, looks great, but unfortunately picks up sh*g all stations, so will be going the S2000 route soon.

Just a quick update,

I have been doing a lot of internet research and looking on some seriously geeky long range radio reception enthusiast forums.

I have a lot of respect for the huge depth of knowledge that those guys had.

Anyway, it seems that what I was talking about is an FM loop aerial.

They need to be tuned apparently.

The ideal length for picking up UK radio stations is a square of 75Ω co-axial cable that is 84cm to a side, in theory that will pick up best at an ideal 91mHz.

98mHz (radio 1) is best at 78cm x 78cm.

There is a bit of give, you can make a rectangular aerial of 112cm x 56cm or 104cm x 52cm respectively.

I think there might be enough give to do a loop around the inside of the back window.

I'll try the front window too to see if that works since the co-ax lead to teh back of the head unit will be shorter (which can only be a good thing)...

I'll keep you updated.
