Fabia Components Fitted - SPL Dynamics 6.2

Featured Replies

Ok so I fitted them a year ago  But the last week I've been making a few changes.

First off here's what the original components look like. Pictures was taken about 5 years ago. Since then its had a couple of different sets fitted.

Some time ago I sound deadened the doors using 2 layers of flashing tape and 1 layer of bodyline on the outer skin. Then a couple of layers of flashing tape on the inner panel. The door skin was rock hard. More of a donk sound than a tin sound. :D However I decided to remove it all. Reason being I wanted to get a PDR out at some stage but didn't know if the sound deadening would effect the work. Plus wanted to loose a bit of the weight.

So for the "new" setup I put 2 layers of bodyline directly behind the mid on the outer skin

Couple of pictures of the mdf rings. These were made using 3x12mm mdf.

Now I had to bond them to the doors. As you can see even with 3x12mm mdf I still needed more room. Bonded with hot glue and some sealent.

Next up was sound deadening of the inner panel. For this I uesed strips of bodyline and about 2 to 3 layers either side.

With the inner panel fitted. Note I used a piece of bodyline to cover up the 3 holes left by removing a piece of plastic than holds the door lock to the inner panel. Also note the 4 pieces of ruber on the mid. This is to give clearent for the cone of the mid and the plastic door panel.

After reeding a few posts on talkaudio I decided to play about the the phase. Now I've always thought it was just a simple matter of matching the + with +. - with -. So I wasn't expecting much.

WOW! what a difference. Found a test track which was a mans voice. Then started swapping the + and - on one of the crossovers. Soundstage is now much better swapping the + and - around. Before hand you could tell the sound was coming from the speaker locations. Now its more in front and higher up

At the moment the SPL's are run of the standard head unit as my old alpine mrv f307 died a couple of years ago. Need to get round to fitting a replacement.

Top job John - looks great

Bet it sounds quite good too!

Wire'd up my 15 year old Goodmans amp to them yesterday. Not sure on the amp power. Guessing around 40WRMS. But they do sound good. Tempted to get rid of the sub all together now. :)

you will regret it. as you have a sub when it goes you will have all the low frequencies missing. It might sound like the comps are dropping low but its a trick due to the lower frequencies being omni directional and even tho the sub is in the boot it sounds like its upfront with the comps

The subs not in at the moment so I already know how it sounds. That's why I'm tempted to get rid altogether :)

will be putting it back in at some stage to see how it sounds now the fronts have more volume.

ah, as you dont have the sub in then not using it you wont notice lol

Nope, you need the sub! :D

Well I'm planning on building a new box for it before I do get shut (if I do).

Should be a tad BIG! :D

Nice job you've done there

I see you've run these speakers off the standard Skoda head unit. How did to compare against the standard head unit with standard speakers? Reason for asking is that I've got a pair of decent speakers from a previous car install sitting around doing nothing, but I don't want to change the head unit in my Fabia and end up losing the CD changer.

In my last Fabia I changed the head unit to an Alpine but left the speakers alone and it did make a big difference.

Nice install, but you will ideally need a sub to compliment the speakers.

Now that you have the mids installed well, you can cross them over lower at say 60Hz and get propper mid bass from them instead of the sub.

With the low pass on the sub at 50Hz and slopes at 12db as a starting point, you should find that the sub underpins the music very well and falls into place.

If you can hear the sub as a seperate entity then you need to do some more work. ;)

Once set up properly, a good sub will add loads to even the best mid bass speakers.

I'd also run it sealed in a car like the Fabia, if your wanting accurate musical bass.

Thanks.

I've ran them for almost a year of the headunit originally replacing my oem vw upgrade speakers for the polo. Compared to them

it was an improvement but quieter but that's expected. The vw speakers were also an improvement over the original speakers. So all in all an improvement :)

I find the standard headunit good just lacks power.

fully agree with what your saying. Been there done that :)

problem is the cheap goodmans doesn't have a hpf :( but then I'm only using it as a stop gap as my old alpine kicked the bucket a couple of years back :( But yeah I do think it will sound much better with the sub around 50/60hz that's why I'm going to put it back in :) but in a nice big potted box tuned to 33hz :) as I find my sub drops off to much low down in the sealed box.
