I've seen lots of people quoting £250 for a cambelt change on 2.0 TDI's at a dealer.

Where are you guys getting these figures from as I can't seem to get anywhere near this inside of the dealer network. Obviously this is an exercise in price finding as we have a couple of cars that will need them doing shortly and while U18 is certainly an option it's a bit of a drive and I'd like to support the local dealer as they have been reasonably good to me.

I had mine done at a main dealer for £250 BUT it was done in conjunction with a major service. A standalone cambelt change may well be more expensive.

I think Caffyns Ashford want something like £290-£300 for a standalone change.

Most the dealers got laughed at down the phone as they are asking £450-550.

One came in at £390 best they can do, local specialist has come in at £310 including a waterpump and full cambelt/tensioner etc kit using all genuine parts.

To be fair it ties in as being due with the next service, but they'd have to do something spectacular to get down to the prices quoted.

I'm looking into this as well. The quotes I got from local indie and dealers were the same: £250 inc labour for cambelt + £40 for water pump. This is for a 2.0 TFSI (not sure if that makes a difference).

Your experience is the same as mine, I’ve had 2 main dealer quotes for my 2.0Tdi one at £450 and one at £415 both with the water pump included. My local VAG independent quoted me £405. One of the main dealers quoted me £650 to combine my third service with a cambelt/water pump change.

Are you planning of changing the water pump as well? My local independent said when they do cambelts around 30% of the cars need a water pump change but I’m not sure what they check to determine this. As the water pump only costs around £35 + 30 min to fit I think I will get it done anyway.

P.S re. your thread in March on 312mm brake upgrade, where did you manage to source the caliper carriers? I'v searched around and most breakers want to sell calipers with carriers for around £100 and the main dealer prices are a con.

Octavia belt change books at about 2.5 hours (depends a bit on model) - so no main dealer will do the job for £250. You will be looking at a minimum £350 inc. parts and up to another £100 if waterpump (parts+labour+coolant top-up) is requested.

Pumps are checked for play in the shaft or coolant weep. Worth replacing anyway really, unless the car has done a very low mileage.

To Jason... I used VAGParts, but they went under recently so it might be a bit harder to source them.

FWIW you might well be able to buy a full set from a breakers then get a metal worker to make you some up for not much and sell the full set on again at the price you paid plus a bit.

Just got a quite of £273 plus £60 for water pump on my Octavia 1.9tdi. Anyone know of any good VW independents in Glasgow?
