05 Octavia 2.0 TDi fuel economy

Featured Replies

As the title suggests I've got the 2.0 TDi model and I'm getting conflicting, and rather disappointing, fuel economy.

When the tank is full (I usually brim it) the remaining milleage usually shows around 620 miles, which I like the sound of. So I drive it, I don't rev high very much, I like to change gears so I'm cruising around town under the 2k revs. As soon as I get to the last quarter of the tank, the remaining miles seems to drop from over 100 to around 20 in a matter of miles.

According to the computer I emptied my tank with an average of 52MPG, but I'd only done 523 miles. I brimmed it again, did some maths and worked out I'd actually done 46MPG.

Is this common? 90% of the milleage has been done locally, hardly any motorway driving. What sort of MPG should I be getting?

Thanks

I would have thought that mpg is ok with town driving..my computer does the same.

I've a 55 2.0TDI that has averaged a calculated 46.2 MPG since new - used on my daily 28 mile crawl/commute into work and back. A fresh tank has the computer suggesting 600+ miles like yours but typically gets around 500. I've calculated that my trip computer is 10% over-optimistic. Sounds about normal to me.

That's about right for a 2.0TDI with your sort of driving.

Driven gently with longer runs you'll get an indicated high 50s MPG but that's about 7% above the true consumption (similar margin of error to the speedo).

The quoted combined figure is about 49.

Fair enough, anything I can do with VAGCOM to fix the overestimating MPG display? heh

A search should find you the instructions.
