Productive Day...Ruined by Cowboys!

Had an interesting day yesterday. My neighbour gave me the keys to his garage (with 2 post lift) to look after and use while he's working offshore, so I thought I'd service the Fabia as it was almost due. This was no bother, but then I thought I'd investigate something else...

Not long after getting the Fabia, some twonk reversed into me and I had to get the rear bumper resprayed. Now, before it went in, the rear parking sensors worked perfectly. Afterwards, they did not :rotz: There's a beep when the car is put in reverse, but nothing after.

I ended up forgetting about it, the Fabia isn't exactly difficult to park, but since I had the car up in the air I thought I'd drop the bumper and take a look, hoping they'd just forgotten to reconnect the sensors. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case.

At first glance, the block connectors on the back of the sensors were wrapped in tape, which didn't bode well. Upon removing the tape, the plastic tongues had been butchered with a screwdriver or something, and the 'male' part had been snapped clean off and left lodged in place :mad: This was on all of them!!

Needless to say I was absolutely raging, just gutted that I left it so long as I probably don't have any comeback now.

Can these connectors be bought separately, how much, and would the existing ones be difficult to replace? Or would I need new sensors/harness?

I cheered myself up by trying out my new snow foam equipment :rofl::thumbup:

No matter how long ago it was the work was done I would be taking it back and having a rant !!!

I can't stand people that can't be bothered to do the job properly :mad:

I have had a quick look on etka and there are 2 harnesses listed for the fabia.

If you give me your chassis number i will sort the correct part number out for you.

Personally I would just buy two new connectors/pins from an electronics store and replace them

Or visit your local gaming machine/jukebox operator and state your case

A harness is a bit severe and expensive, and at the worst you could just use block connectors

you can get the connectors, but it is nearly impossible to get the terminals for them unless you buy them in quantities of about 50,000 direct from tyco/amp.

I think that Leodhasach is meaning the bodies or adaptors for the sensors - the part that pushes into the bumper cover. I see to remember that all this stuff is eye wateringly expensive. If I'm wrong, and its just the plug and/or socket connectors, if you examine them you should find a VAG P/N and just order in what you need, the actual pins will not be damaged I'd reckon, and can be retrieved by gently cracking the chassis or the connectors in a vice - then refit them into the new connector bodies until they "click in" then using a small screwdriver slide the locking "horsehoe clip" across. Also in theory, I'd think that you can buy these pins separately from VAG - but the problem is exactly how can you work out from the parts list which ones you need - I don't know what quantities they are sold in though from that source.

I'd still take it back to the people who did the work for you - who cares how long ago it was.... if they refuse to assist you, tell them you'll go to trading standards

Yep, think that's one of tomorrow's jobs, taking my dad along also as he's seen the damage too. It's just a pain as there's obviously a limited number of bodyshops here, and this one is meant to be the best...obviously not :mad:

What sort of 'assistance' should I ask for, repair or refund? Never had to complain about shoddy workmanship before :(

Thanks for the input folks, for the record the damaged components I'm referring to are the plugs that connect the wiring harness on the car to the physical sensors on the bumper. Fairly standard looking (fair few of them under the bonnet), male and female, with a locking tab. Three pins if I remember rightly, but they seemed to be corroded from being exposed for so long. I can see this becoming a real ballache.

Don't know what the proper name for these connectors is (where's Lummox?), but I know from working in a garage that you don't have to mangle them to remove them :thumbdwn:
