How to remove Octy 2 vRS oil filter

Featured Replies

guys,

can anyone tell me what size socket it is needed to remove the oil filter housing off a 2008 petrol vRS? The largest I have is (correction) 32mm which is too small.

Also what's the orangey "valve" underneath the "end cap" for? Is it for draining the oil out of the filter to save a mess?

Lastly ;) there's an arrow going clockwise - which I would have assumed is for tightening, BUT it does make me wonder why they'd out an arrow on.....I mean the only thing I can think of which turns clockwise to loosen are cycle pedals and oxygen cylinders (or is it nitrogen )

I've searched high and low and can't find any guides about this.

Any help gratefully received.

Hi,

Just had a look on ELSA and all it suggests is to use an oil filter wrench, doesn't specify what the jaw size should be though. My best suggestion would be to use a chain type wrench as they give a decent amount of torque to undo anything thats seriously jammed on. Also when putting it back together, the filter housing should be tightened to 25Nm, and all of the gaskets/o-rings replaced.

As for the orangey valve at the bottom, yes you remove that to drain the oil from the filter (supposedly using a VAG specialist tool... which all of us have of course:rolleyes:)

And finally, i haven't got a clue as to why they put a big arrow on the filter cover, probably going to be one of those unsolved mysteries for now.

Hope this is of some help.

cheers Gary,

most helpful - I'll phone German and Swedish or Murrays to see if they have any idea about the drain tool.

Alas there's not enough room to get a filter removal tool round the housing - I guess that's why the socket fitting is on the end. Also it's totally smooth plastic so I reckon a strap wrench would seriously damage it.

Yeah i suppose on thinking about it a strap wrench might do some damage to the filter housing, again there's probably a specialist tool like everything VAG... might be worth asking about that too
