Did my door seals today.

Featured Replies

Knew my door seals were leaking a couple of months back but had to wait for both the time to do the job and a dry day. I took the two rear door cards off on Saturday and found that the carrier had been sealed already, very badly. Somebody had smeared red silicone of some sort all around the door carrier. This explained the tool marks on the arm rests. There were gaps in the silicone and in places the original foam seal was showing through. I pared it all back to an even seam where I could and using U-Pol Tigerseal put down a good heavy bead on the bottom half of the door. Picked up some clips from the dealer and put the cards back on today. It lashing down at the moment so I'll know in the morning if my work was good or not, withstanding a bucket of water is not the same as real rain and wind.

Two things I found useful doing this were a pair of sturdy plastic bicycle tyre levers, the flat end to pry up the plastics on the door and the hooked end to get at hard to reach clips, and a little finger shaped silicone tool to work in the sealant, dead handy.

Thanks to everyone that had previously posted a guide for this, made it an easy job.

Ah, the fabled door seals!

That's a good tip about the tyre levers; can imagine those coming in handy for the job.

I was removing old seal yesterday morning (If you can call it old seal) I put it on just a couple of days ago... (window regulator failed the same day)

I can see why the seal fails, especially when applied as you described. The stuff I used had stuck to the aluminium but didn't give much of a fight when peeling it back off. It stuck like hell to the foam though, ripping it as it pulled away and it also stuck fast to the paint! Ended up using an old credit card to get most of it off, then a rubber to remove residue followed by foam cleanser!
