Weak coil springs (vRS)

Featured Replies

My standard springs seem to have gone "soft" recently, I replaced all 4 shocks less than 6 months ago (gen Skoda) and the car is bouncing off the bump stops and feels all wooly (it's poly bushed throughout so it's not a bush problem).

I've checked for the normal broken spring problem and the shocks have plenty of rebound so I can only assume the springs have gone weak.

It's a 2003 Octy Vrs with 70k with a full dealer/specialist history which gets driven like a model citizen (ish), however there's more speed humps in 1 square mile around my home than MP's on the fiddle!

My wifes 1.3 Toyota Starlet with 125k rides the bumps better and compared to my sons Leon Cupra it's like driving a 2CV.

I love the car (I bought it when a year old with 8k) but it's just not nice to drive at the moment.

Andy.

Are you sure you were given vRS shocks?

Yep, same VAG part No's on the old and the new.

Hi!

The Octavia - also the vRS - is known to be quite a bit "underdamped" and nose-heavy.

When changing shocks, one (almost) always shall change springs - as they experience the same "wear and tear" as the shocks.

So I can understand that your car now feels "soft". Soft OEM dampers, and "old", soft springs.

Many vRS owners on this forum upgrade their suspension. H&R and Koni FSD's are a well known combination. I belive this combination will work well even over speed bumps.

I do not drive a vRS, and uses other springs, but my FSD shocks make my car cope superbly with speed bumps. Earlier it scraped its front bumper-lip, "diving" over speed-bumps. Now it goes completely flat over them. No more "nose-diving".

Do what you like, but no more OEM shocks (and springs) for me!
