Increased idle

Featured Replies

Hi all new member great forum allready learnt loads.

Now to the problem i recently bought a felicia 1.6 GLXI estate 46000 miles which drives superbly initialy i had a problem with it cutting out compleatly on two occasions but this i think i have solved by changing the fuel pump relay and has not cut out since, fingers crossed. The problem that has developed now is that the idle with engine warm is at 1000rpm instead of 750rpm as it was and at steady throttle positions you can feel the revs drop or increase which makes driving smoothly akward.I have had a good look under the bonnet i can hear no air leaks cleaned out the top half of the throttle plate, the temp. gauge in the car seems to be working fine and the fan cuts in just over half way, i have also noticed that it has a green banded temp. sensor fitted i think i read that for my car it should be yellow? i have also run the engine with this sensor unpluged and makes no difference any thoughts or suggestions would be much appriciated.

thanks joe

Try this:-

1) Make sure you have the radio code (if applicable).

2) Disconnect battery negative and leave overnight.

3) Reconnect battery, and go for 30 minute drive.

Hi Ken thanks for the advice i will try this.In my initial post i said that the temp. sensor was green my mistake its actualy yellow.I have ordered some parts from jorrily,so i can clean out the throttle body properly and a fuel filter which by looking at the exstensive service history has never been changed i will do these and try your suggestion and report back, once again many thanks for your reply.

I had some transient problems recently on my 57000 W 1.6Glxi and one thing I noted was a rather grotty rotor arm and distributer cap..another thing that gets forgotten perhaps? these days as the tendancy may be to lean towards things more electronic.??

I got genuine replacements for both items as it enabled the keeping of the surrounding supression ? cover...

It seems to be behaving better currently but I am not convinced I have not got another slight gremlin in something.??

...the episode started in late winter with occasional missed starts and erratic throttle response..er, and one damp morning very erratic running and glowing exhaust down pipes.!!

Clive.

Hi all

Just an update i changed the fuel filter this weekend and as suspected it doesnt look like its ever been changed and having done the job i can see why people avoid doing it.

But its made a big difference, it now idles at a steady 700 rpm (maybe a touch low) but better than the revs going up and down. But the biggest improvement now is when i decelerate the revs dont hang on or suddenly drop catching you by supprise, the revs now drop down gradually making for a much smoother drive.

I also wonder if the blocked fuel filter was linked to my initial problem with the fuel pump relay. My thinking being the pump having to work harder placing more of a load on the relay making it run hotter causing it to fail.Just an idea.

That makes sense. Back in the days of carbie engines (and even fuellies with adjustable throttle stops) my mates and I used to set the idle speed as low as we could provided the engine idled smoothly.
