When to change fron tyres?

Featured Replies

32 all round here, and no wear issues. Remember if that is cold, then you can be 3-4psi over this when hot. So they should be operating around 35psi which is what everyone says - hence no wear issues (even all over)

So if you're running 36, your actually using them vastly over inflated (as they'll be circa 39 hot). It's why when checking pressures on a hot tyre, you should set them 3-4psi higher than if cold.

I'm well aware of the importance of checking the pressures when cold!

However, running at 32 on the front as per the manual left me with several sets of tyres with bald shoulders before I decided to move away from the specs... :ne_nau:

As said, I never check mine cold. No need to if you allow 3-4psi extra.

Another issue is wheel size. I'm running 17's, so a 16" would need more (Fabia has 16's?) and 18's similar to the 17's surely?

I change them at 2-3mm - I do a lot of motorway driving and so standing water is a fair hazard as is emergency stops on country roads (usually wet) in scotland. You can generally tell when they are at this level. Usually have them rotated every 10k miles, and then just change all 4.

If it's good enough for police cars's it's good enough for me.

I have seen some good examples about difference between legal 1.6mm and 3 mm to know I don't want to be having to do an emergency stop when someone steps out in front of my car (they won't only do that on a dry day, will they?)
