Škoda Auto starts producing a modernised three-cylinder 1.2l engine

Škoda Auto has started producing a modernised 1.2 HTP engine in its engine manufacturing plant in Mladá Boleslav, the place of the car manufacturer's head office. Extensive adaptations made to this economical three-cylinder petrol unit have been devised by the Department of Technological Development.

The engine modernisation includes a number of measures – perhaps the most important one is in that the old link chain driving the valve timing mechanism has been replaced by a cogged one. Furthermore, the weight of the crankshaft has been reduced. The adaptations have been made to both existing engine versions, i.e., two-valve and four-valve units.

“The adaptations made to the existing unit, including the optimisation of its weight, will smoothen its operation and reduce fuel consumption, emission and noise levels,” said Eckhard Scholz, Škoda Auto BOD member responsible for technological development.

The modernised three-cylinder 1.2l engine is going to be used in a number of VW Group vehicles, including the Škoda Fabia, Škoda Roomster, VW Polo, VW Fox, Seat Ibiza and Seat Cordoba. The Škoda plant in Mladá Boleslav produced altogether 270,875 three-cylinder 1.2l atmospheric engines in 2008.

mmm we have a Fabia 1 on order which the dealer tells me will be in production this week. Do you think it'll have the new engine? Hopefully it will mean lower emissions?

Damn! Just taken delivery of a Fabia 1.2.......

It had only been delivered to dealer about 4 weeks ago. The engine was built in March 2009 so I guess I have an "old" HTP

Hello,

What code have the new engine of 1.2? I think they changed the code and engine!

Old 1.2 engines will be called, suffered any change?

The article says:

The Škoda plant in Mladá Boleslav produced altogether 270,875 three-cylinder 1.2l atmospheric engines in 2008

If by "atmospheric engines" they mean the new type of engines, it seems that this engine has been in production on the Fabia's since 2008 so I hope that the new ones are with this engine... we'll wait and see. Unfortunately I can't find too much info about the Fabia MkII. Anything you type about the Fabia on Google almost always takes you to a site called "trovit" or something similar. Otherwiese, either insignificant matches or matches to the older model of the Fabia.

No... atmospheric means non-turbo charged.

No... atmospheric means non-turbo charged.

oops! :o

Further info on the modernised engine:

- It has been done to bring the engine in line with forthcoming EU5 emissions standards

- Production has begun, but I guess they might take a while to filter through to the Skoda range if they have some old units stockpiled.

- No information available on how it effects the Fabia yet, but in the new Polo it reduces CO2 by an impressive 10g/km from 138 to 128.

- No changes to power or performance

  • 2 weeks later...

do you have a list of engine numbers that point to the new engines?

It looks as if the translation has been slightly twisted. Apparently the chain has been replaced with a cogged belt. i.e. They've gone and fitted a cambelt!!!

This is a big disappointment as any improvement in mpg will be negated (massively) by the cost of cambelt changes. Unless that is, they have managed to design a lifetime cambelt. (Continental have long claimed that their cambelts are good for the life of an engine)

hmmmmm...... makes you doubt :(
